applications in the marketplace
is strong.

Each Role Defines
‘Application’ Differently
The term “application” seems
straightforward enough, but its
meaning varies depending on the
point of view:
ĀÃ 7KHÃPDQDJHUÃLQÃDÃOLQHÃRIÃ
business (LOB), like production
planning for example, might
define application as a
collection of programs that
supports the creation of goods
sold by a company.
ĀÃ $QÃDSSOLFDWLRQÃGHYHORSHUÃPLJKWÃ
view it as software that enables
the writing of programs that
integrate data from different
sources and use the data in
business-process automation.
ĀÃ )RUÃDÃV\VWHPÃSURJUDPPHUÃRU
technology specialist supporting
a company’s infrastructure and
software, an application might
include systems and network
management tools, security
software or database utilities.

LOB Managers
LOB application software on
Linux generally falls under one
of two categories—by function
or by industry. One example of a
by-function software package that
runs on Linux is ERP software from

from IBM and other companies to
KHOSÃLPSOHPHQWÃ6$3ÃRQÃ/LQX[Ã6$3Ã
offers modules for finance, human
resources, IT, manufacturing,
marketing, procurement, R&D,
engineering, sales, service, supply
chain and sustainability.
$GGLWLRQDOO\ÃDSSOLFDWLRQÃ
software supporting many

industries runs on Linux and
is tested to operate on IBM
platforms. One such application
in the healthcare industry is
OpenEMR, a certified electronic
health records and medical

practice management application. It features
fully integrated electronic health records, practice
management, scheduling and electronic billing.
$ÃILQDQFLDOÃVHUYLFHVÃH[DPSOHÃLVÃ)OH[,PDJHÃZKLFKÃ
handles electronic management of documents.
Developed specifically for the financial market, it

Mainframes and
Business Continuity:
New Game, Same Rules
Requirements for Achieving Both
Resiliency and Recoverability
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Decision makers responsible for
Data Centers and Operations

SPECIAL OFFER
5 attendees will each win a $50 American Express Gift Card

AGENDA
While many tout high availability (HA) technologies as a panacea
for resiliency and continuous operations, HA technologies have not
changed the requirements for disaster preparedness.
Even with data mirroring and replication, significant loss exposures
persist: data cached in memory or transiting across a WAN are
at risk. Worse yet, procedures for restarting failed batch jobs and
other applications often go unwritten and untested, resulting in
a misunderstanding of the capabilities -- and the limitations -- of
schedulers, databases and application software.
This webinar addresses the misconceptions that have taken root in too
many IT shops, threatening to erode disaster preparedness. Resiliency
does not trump recoverability: organizations need both!
