TECHBITS To watch how Andreas Heinrich and his team made the world’s shortest movie, go to A Microscopic Short Film IBM Research scientists have created the world’s smallest movie—as verified by Guinness World Records. With a frame size of only 45 nanometers by 25 nanometers, “A Boy and His Atom” ( features thousands of atoms manipulated by a scanning tunneling microscope, which was invented by IBM. The short uses stop-motion and includes about 250 frames of action. SOURCE: IBM Reduce, Reuse, Relaunch Social Media Redefined NASA’s next-generation capsule, the Orion Multipurpose Crew Vehicle, will be considerably smaller than the retired space shuttles. At 26 feet long and 46,848 pounds, it’s 96 feet shorter and about 193,000 pounds lighter. However, it will share one key attribute— reusability. Scheduled for its first test flight in 2017, the Orion capsule is designed to be reused for missions to the moon, asteroids and, someday, Mars. The impact of social media and technology on the modern world was clearly defined in the latest update to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). In addition to expanding the definitions of “follower” and “tweet” to include their Twitter meanings, the OED now includes “crowdsourcing,” “mouseover” and “big data.” SOURCE: SPACE.COM SOURCE: OXFORDWORDS BLOG 10 // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 http://www.SPACE.COM
