Editor’s Desk Inside this month’s issue See Beyond the Silos CONTRIBUTORS ot my job.” We’ve all heard that infuriating phrase. Whether it’s from a disgruntled co-worker, a less than helpful customer service representative or a faceless bureaucrat, that sense of resignation and dismissiveness is a formidable roadblock to collaboration, innovation and getting things done. Ultimately, “not my job” is borne out of a siloed view of one’s role within an organization. And if I’ve learned anything from business and technology journals, it’s that, outside of agricultural uses, silos are bad. Whether it’s data analytics or organizational collaboration, tearing down silos is a good place to start. That’s equally true with application development and systems operations departments, where staff members and their responsibilities are frequently kept separate. However, a DevOps approach seeks to bring these siloed groups together to build synergy and agilely produce software solutions that drive business. That’s the message of this issue’s feature, “Building a DevOps Pipeline” on page 32. Likewise, IBM Systems Magazine sat down with IBM Rational* Vice President and Distinguished Engineer Hayden Lindsey to learn more about making DevOps a reality on System z*. The Q&A with him is on page 26. For N Tim Hahn Athletic aspirations The author of “Building a DevOps Pipeline” on page 32, Tim Hahn has been competing in triathlons since 2009. Having completed three marathons as well as sprint and international distances, he’s now set his sights on finishing an iron-distance triathlon, which involves a 3.9K swim and a 190K ride, capped off by a full 42.2K marathon. In the case study on page 18, Thomas Connolly, managing director and BNY Mellon’s global head of mainframe services, shares that financial institution’s zEnterprise* EC12 consolidation story. By investing in a standardized mainframe environment, BNY Mellon increased its workload performance while cutting annual technology costs by about 15 percent, as Connolly explains. It’s clearly another example of how taking innovative approaches and utilizing System z technology can deliver exceptional competitive advantage and savings. It starts by taking off the blinders and seeing myriad possibilities. Because when someone can’t see beyond his or her immediate responsibilities, “not my job” really means “not my opportunity.” Mike Westholder, Managing Editor and camping keep him occupied when he’s not in his studio. 6 pg 6.indd 1 MAY/JUNE 2 013 Contact Mike at 4/15/13 3:31 PM
