How IBM Helps Customers Integrate Mobile Technology
A
s the mobile survey conducted by
Unisphere Research on behalf of
SHARE, GUIDE SHARE Europe and
IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe edition
shows, organizations are formulating mobile
strategies and implementing them in their
business processes. These enterprises can
rely on IBM for assistance in how best to
integrate mobile.
“Mobile devices are clearly the next
big wave of computing and the mobile
space presents many opportunities for
IBM and its customers,” says Saran K.
Bommakanti, program manager, System
z* Banking. These opportunities include
business-to-enterprise benefits gained
by increasing worker productivity and
improving processing times. In addition,
mobile can help boost efficiency by
extending existing applications to mobile
workers and customers.
To find out more about how IBM is
assisting clients with mobile, the magazine
sat down with Bommakanti.
Q: In your experience, what are the
main challenges that enterprises
face regarding mobile and mainframe
development?
A: Along with many opportunities in
the mobile space, enterprises face a
number of challenges when developing
mobile applications. Fortunately, IBM has
capabilities to help our customers address
those challenges, which include:
r A fragmented market—The mobile
market is fragmented with various
device makers and platforms. You must
build enterprise-level mobile applications
that can run on multiple mobile devices.
This bring your own device (BYOD)
mindset is forcing companies to support
a range of devices. The challenge is
to support completely incompatible
mobile device ecosystems for the same
business application. To do this, you
need the right skills in place to design,
develop and support these applications.
The cost of supporting various platforms
quickly can become prohibitive.
In general, mobile development is
more expensive than traditional Web
application development.
r Security—Mobile devices are more
vulnerable to loss or theft than a
regular computer. Therefore, mobile
applications must be highly secure to
protect any confidential or personal data
on the device.
r Integration and development—Applications
must integrate securely into backend
enterprise services and the cloud
and be ready to scale appropriately.
Development teams also say the mobile
application development cycle or time
to market for a solution is much more
aggressive compared to other kinds
of enterprise software where a typical
development cycle would be 12 to 18
months. Mobile applications, on the
other hand, often must be in the market
within weeks. The app development lifecycle
on mainframe is just as demanding
as on distributed platforms for mobile.
You have to figure out how to manage
all of the elements effectively from the
device to the back-end platform.
Q: How can organizations best plan for
the expansion of mobile?
A: Mobile infrastructure needs to be defined
and optimized for client mobility plans,
processes, security, middleware and device
selection. Customers must not only plan
for current network demand, BYOD and
mobile security challenges, but also for
future changes. Customers must manage
mobility by focusing on mobile device
management, end-user support, secure
access to corporate email, collaboration,
and business applications. It may be wise
to limit the number of mobile platforms
being supported initially so that you better
control product delivery schedules and
potential cost overruns.
Let’s look at how banking and retail can
plan for mobile. Mobile payments offer
a new revenue source for banks, which
must be ready to support features such
as transfers of funds and payments that
don’t occur at the teller window, but instead
happen at the bump of a smartphone or by
a mobile deposit with a camera. Retailers
need to shift from generalized promotions
to more specific and targeted customer
ones based on capturing location and
context data.
Q: What are some common mistakes
that organizations make regarding
mobile? How can they avoid them?
A: Mobile collaboration or BYOD solutions
have three key elements—the mobile
devices themselves, mobile applications
and network support. Often, much of the
emphasis is placed on mobile devices and
applications. The role of the network and
its capabilities often becomes a secondary
consideration. This can be a mistake. We
believe that the fundamental goal of any
mobile collaboration or BYOD policy should
be providing employees with the best enduser
experience possible by allowing them
to easily and reliably access the information,
applications and mobile collaboration tools
they need to excel in their jobs. Networks
must deliver new levels of security while
easing onboarding and access for legitimate
users. Don’t just focus on devices and cool
apps. Rather, companies must examine the
underlying legacy applications and business
processes that must be optimized for the
mobile experience.
Q: What are some of the solutions IBM
offers customers?
A: IBM mobile solutions, such as Worklight*
and End Point Manager for Mobile, deliver
open, security-rich software capabilities
and services to address the mobile needs
of the enterprise across the entire business
and IT lifecycle. IBM can provide a costeffective
deployment of multiple platforms
with a common experience and a common
branding philosophy across different
mobile devices and platforms. The mobile
foundation also has capabilities to address
BYOD security and management aspects.
