tions are finding mobile computing is
important for customer service. “IBM is
always talking about employees getting
better and faster access to more reliable
information using analytics and
how important that is in improving
customer service,” Clabby says. “I found
it interesting that those were the top two
benefits from having a mobile strategy.”

mobile application interations with your users?

that respond to customer demand and
can broaden the customer base, provide
customers access to business functionality
and boost interest in new offerings
to customers. Collecting customer usage
patterns and capturing customer attention
24-7 ranks low on the list.
A whopping 71 percent of respondents
say obtaining customer feedback on products
and services is the most important
information that could be obtained by
mobile apps interacting with users (see
Figure 4, above). Receiving information
on customer interests and habits also
scores high. Information on customer
friends and social networks is considered
to be the least important data.
“My company is very interested in
technological innovation,” says Juan
Carlos Pérez Ledesma, security consultant
for El Corte Inglés, S.A., Spain’s
largest chain of department stores.

“Considering that each smartphone with
Internet access is a potential customer 24
hours a day, 365 days a year, these figures
are very important and you have to evaluate
them in perspective,” he explains.
El Corte Inglés is looking to provide
e-commerce services through mobile
apps and payment via mobile. Those
services will add commercial business
value and bring the company’s online store
to the attention of millions of potential
customers. “The desire of our senior
management is to have a solution during
the first half of 2013, and introduce to the
market as one of the first companies to
offer their customers this possibility. The
projects are on track and we think we will
meet the deadlines,” Pérez adds.
This part of the survey reveals that
the key benefits of mobile are better
and faster access to information, Clabby
explains. It also shows that organiza-

Keeping Data Secure
How devices are used may vary from
company to company, but one concern is
considered critical by all—security. About
54 percent of respondents say security is
the greatest challenge to extending mobile
to the enterprise (see Figure 5, below).
The use of privately owned devices
within the enterprise is the top factor
driving investment in security for mobile
computing, according to the survey. A
close second is the increase in telecommuting
and off-premise workers. The
deployment of new enterprise mobile
applications ranks third, followed by
the rise in overall security breaches.
Enabling external contractors, consultants
and business partners to access the
enterprise network is another key factor.
Some basic security measures are
in place. The majority of companies
supplying mobile applications use encryption,
according to the survey. About 56
percent of companies have a process or
policy in place to lock or wipe out a mobile
device if it is lost or stolen.
For many enterprises, the default secu-
rity setting is to allow only employees with
corporate-managed devices to access backend
data. About 40 percent of respondents
say this is the policy at their companies.
Other security models include BYOD
with security at the back end, employees
