IT Today Addressing IT challenges worldwide The Rolling Stones and Virtualization Where do System z and a legendary rock band intersect? By Kershaw S. Mehta A fter reading this article’s headline, you’re probably thinking, “What do the Rolling Stones and virtualization have to do with each other?” My response is, “Cloud on System z*,” which in no way clears up the question. So let’s go a bit deeper. relevant. Unlike the Rolling Stones lyric, though, IBM wants to encourage you to get onto its cloud! In 1965, the Rolling Stones had a No. 1 hit single called, “Get Off of My Cloud.” Little did the Rolling Stones know that more than 40 years later, the cloud would become a widespread IT industry term and a methodology for delivering IT services. This definition of cloud has entered the common lexicon used in everyday TV commercials and print ads. As for virtualization, earlier this year IBM celebrated the 40th anniversary of the groundbreaking announcement of virtualization software for System z. Now known as z/VM*, this was the world’s first commercially available hypervisor to provide virtualization technology—one of the key tenets to establishing a cloud environment. Both the song and the technology were introduced in the ’60s, and both remain Service-Delivery Model When I have conversations with IBM’s enterprise clients about the technology and value behind cloud for System z, I often need to adjust the message based on the audience reaction. One reaction from a subset of the audience is, “Why would I do cloud on System z?” Another I often hear is, “System z has always been a cloud environment, what’s new?” These two and sometimes diametrically opposed views are addressed the same way: Cloud should not be thought of as a workload, but rather, as a servicedelivery model.
