There will always be security challenges. But you need to grow the business in spite of them.
SCM: How is IBM positioning itself to continue to be successful in this new environment? KL: The new environment is putting

control in the hands of the market. I think IBM has many initiatives that impact these technologies. Big data becomes a massive play because of the amount of data being generated and shared. The ability to analyze and manage the data is something that

everyone will find valuable. Other key initiatives are Smarter Commerce, Social Business, Mobile Enterprise and Smart Cloud. (To learn more about IBM’s mobile initiatives, visit www.ibm.com/mobile-enterprise.) With every initiative, IBM looks at how it relates to the others. The crucial concern is the client initiative for each customer. Some customers may need to create a different way to approach the markets. Others might want to launch a BYOD initiative. Some might be rethinking how they handle customer relationship management. IBM can address

the initiatives from any angle as we understand how they relate to each other. Our job is to help customers understand the new environment, to create its own value going forward and how these technologies can help them get there. It’s an exciting time in the marketplace and for CIOs. You don’t see too many shifts like this in your career. The challenges may seem huge, but the opportunities are even bigger. b Shirley S. Savage is a Maine-based freelance writer.

SUPPORTING BYOD
SCM: Employees are no longer tied to their desks to access a central database through the on-site company IT system. Instead, employees can access business information from their mobile phones. How can CIOs support this freedom of mobility? KL: Bring your own device, or BYOD, is happen-

ing in a lot of companies. Being at the forefront of deciding whether that works for your company or not is where the CIO needs to be. I’m not saying that BYOD is the right choice for every company. However, from the employee’s perspective, it is liberating to be able to work in a more profoundly productive way. I think CIOs should embrace what’s going on in the market and understand how it will relate to the company. With BYOD, CIOs have to understand how to manage and secure these devices and how to integrate these non-business owned technologies into the infrastructure. CIOs need to understand why the company will or won’t engage in BYOD. A CIO might not embrace the strategy, but needs to accept the challenge. If a BYOD strategy works somewhere in your company, get ahead of it and try. CIOs should reach out to the lines of business teams and say, “We’ve got a sales team going after new markets and there are social and mobile applications available that fit on the cloud that manage our relationship with partners and clients. We need to reach out and try these technologies in a contained

way and see what happens.” Pick a pilot area to discover the natural balance point in the organization as well as to uncover the pitfalls and the risks. As every organization has a particular culture, the CIO needs to understand where the balance point is. If the company decides to use social technology, how far out of control will a conversation get if employees are allowed to just talk? Do the employees self correct? When and how do employees self correct? By finding the answers, you will know what new guidelines need to be put in place. Do employees need education on business ethics and how the company conducts business? By launching a pilot, you start to get a feel for how your organization will embrace the technologies and what the pitfalls will be relative to your competition and client base. Companies also can pick an area that’s more internally focused and see what the risks are. CIOs should be partnering with business control teams and privacy teams on these pilots. At IBM, we’ve restructured business conduct guidelines and how we do training around business conduct guidelines. What are the guidelines for social business? How do you engage when you use your personal phone? Employees don’t know how to do these things as well as we think they do. Employees shouldn’t be talking about product strategy on Facebook. If CIOs partner with their peers, companies can develop guidelines and learn to accept and control the various risks. The CIO can be a leader in helping the organization move forward in understanding the ins and outs of ethics and business conduct. —S.S.S.
