cloud? Desk procedures that modify existing ones and exploit the process innovations made possible by cloud technology must be planned and implemented during the initial pilot project. Can vendors that provide support for different areas in the organization coexist, and who provides end-to-end governance of IT? This analysis should be done early in the project. An understanding about roles and responsibilities can be tested and proven during the pilot project.

See the authors discuss more on the integration of cloud and noncloud infrastructures: http://videos. ibmsystemsmag.com/video/ Overcoming-Cloud-Challenges-2; mainframe

When a specific integration pattern is required—for example, an environment supporting systems management or service management processes—several elements must be considered and documented for use during service transition and operation. These steps are described in the context of the following incident management usecase example, illustrated in Figure 1 (page 28). This example connects traditional and cloud environments with integrated services software that replicates incident, problem and change records between the two environments. Application integration facilitates incidents and events, which are placed in a common repository

that can be used for analysis and problem-solving. First, develop a service description based on the IT infrastructure library (ITIL), which can provide an end-to-end service management function to handle incidents transparently across the cloud or a noncloud delivery environment. The solution design should include narratives like: A customer calls the main service desk (SD) in traditional IT to report an application down. The SD troubleshoots to identify the issue with cloud infrastructure and transfers the incident to cloud support. After the issue is resolved, the incident is closed within cloud support and closed on the main SD seamlessly using an integration-services bridge solution. A service responsibility matrix should be developed. It may indicate, for example, that the SD (in traditional IT) raises all incidents, owns escalations and establishes governance. The matrix might also indicate that the traditional IT staff supports applications management while cloud delivery supports OS management. Finally, provide cost guidance information by determining one-time or monthly costs—and the basis for those costs—for each component, such as service bridge software, setup labor or possible human costs for each incident.

Pilot, don’t plunge. It’s important to consider the four P's—pilot, phase, parallel and plunge—and use (or avoid) these implementation tactics in a sensible manner. Use pilots to learn, try phase or parallel to implement in production, and avoid the plunge. Use just-in-time integration patterns. Identify integration patterns ahead of time but consider developing them, as needed, and plan for reuse. Avoid delaying projects until all patterns are developed, but rather develop or reuse them, as needed. Focus on reuse and quality. Plan for reuse with templates, and conduct walkthroughs of artifacts before they become generally available. Templates can ease the work burden and help ensure a good quality work product.

Despite the challenges, investment in cloud integration is worth it because of such cloud benefits as lower costs, fast provisioning, capability to scale and simpler solutions. When you plan carefully, ask the right questions and implement with purpose, your cloud integration will be successful and you’ll reap the benefits.

When considering how to integrate cloud solutions into your organization’s existing infrastructure and services, keep these recommendations in mind. Plan, then start. Plan just enough in the systems strategy phase to get going. Try not to let planning—and uncertainty—get in the way of starting your cloud implementation. Embed solution planning into project phases to get a fast start.
