IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe Edition - November/December 2012 - 24

Why is this heterogeneous approach better than, say a homogeneous architecture? Many in the industry do try to simplify the cloud and think that all cloud usages are going to be deployed on a single, homogeneous architecture. The reality is that deployment of multitiered applications—WebSphere*, SAP, Oracle—require multiple application servers and database environments that really need a mixed-platform architecture. They’re not all going to run the same because they all have different service-level needs. This notion that cloud equals x86, I just don’t fundamentally believe that. As we get used to private or public clouds, we’re going to find that the world isn’t homogeneous. It never has been. I don’t think it ever will be. Can you share an example of the benefits firms are reporting from private cloud deployments on System z? Absolutely. For one U.S. bank, system administrator productivity was a big focus, and with System z, it saw a 200 percent increase in the productivity of its staff. As an example, the time it took to provision a system or virtual machine—including the procurement, deployment and set-up process of a stand-alone system—went from 45 days down to 20 minutes. If someone needed a new virtual machine to immediately meet the bank’s needs—maybe the chief marketing officer has something in mind to reach out to clients, for example—you can get that up and running in 20 minutes. That’s a pretty dramatic change. In this bank’s case, they went from system admins managing about 50 physical servers to a point where they can manage it now, with System z, running 600 virtual systems. The whole point is about this efficiency that the System z platform brings, its flexibility and its capability to do really deep virtualization.

BM offers a System z Cloud Portal—the IBM Linux on System z Cloud Test Drive—that enables clients to experience a cloud on System z from anywhere in the world via the Internet. With access to Linux servers selected from the system images IBM provides, users can see the power and efficiency of a cloud with Linux on System z. Once system images are selected, users have up to 90 days of access to the servers to customize them with their own data. Individuals can contact their IBM System z representative or Anne Marie Sweetland at (amsweet@ us.ibm.com) to nominate their company for this 90-day free trial.

For organizations just starting to explore their cloud options, where do you recommend they begin? A logical starting point is to look at server sprawl and use Linux to consolidate them on the System z platform. You get all of the benefits of virtualization and you’re able to take advantage of the new SmartCloud tools. To start, they should examine their Linux deployment with the many servers they likely have. Are they happy with their total cost of ownership, including space, power, cooling and people? Or would they like something that reduces that by up to 70 percent? It becomes a very simple economics discussion at that point. I know which I would pick. We’ve talked a lot about the zEnterprise and System z capabilities for cloud, so what’s new in terms of the latest SmartCloud offering? Now with the SmartCloud technology being introduced to the mainframe, you can build layers of provisioning and automation on top of that great virtualization capability—and do so in a consistent way. So, for the clients who have been working with other IBM platforms around provisioning and automation, the toolset becomes

consistent. I’d say that toolset unleashes the built-in value that zEnterprise technology has had for a long time in the context of the cloud. We’ve now enabled its built-in differentiation via that toolset.

From your perspective, what’s the future of cloud on System z? We’re just beginning, and the future looks bright. IBM continues to add management capabilities around zEnterprise. We feel very good about the base differentiation of the platform in the cloud, whether it be consolidation of virtual machines or the capability to offer heterogeneous architectures. What clients continue to look for is more automation and provisioning toolsets, so they can find ways to speed time to value in the cloud architecture in order to get all of these great benefits out of the System z technology. That’s where we continue to focus, making it simpler and easier to use as we continue to move forward.
