Focus on Storage Benefits of System Storage technology High-Performing Storage The DS8870 provides up to three times the performance of its predecessor By Caroline Vitse O rganizations are being challenged to efficiently maintain a volume of data that’s growing by leaps and bounds. At the same time, the data itself is becoming more complex, as are the data centers that house it. Data centers now include many server environments that may have distinct storage systems, which must all be managed separately. Organizations trying to address this increasing complexity are seeing rising storage and related management costs. Helping overcome these challenges are the IBM Smarter Storage solutions, including the DS8000* series of disk systems. They’re designed to help organizations take control of their storage so they can focus on gaining more valuable insights from their data. With the October release of the DS8870 model, IBM is building upon its flagship disk system by delivering improved performance, energy efficiency and flexibility. This new, smarter storage approach is optimized for enterprise systems such as IBM System z* and Power Systems* servers. improvement by using POWER7* technology. Upgraded POWER7 controllers—able to scale up to 16 cores each—can support up to 1 TB of system cache, which is a 160 percent increase over the previous DS8800 model. The DS8870 system delivers up to three times the performance as well. Clients can scale processing power and cache memory, thanks to the updated POWER7 processor and cache configuration. With this feature, organizations can flexibly and nondisruptively meet growing workload requirements. While encryption was optional on previous models, full-disk encryption drives now are standard on the DS8870. This simplifies the encryption of data at rest—all organizations must do is purchase the license for either Tivoli* Key Lifecycle Manager or IBM Security Key Lifecycle Manager to fully protect their data when drives or complete systems are replaced, Introducing the DS8870 The newest model of the DS8000 offers a substantial and scalable performance NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2012 11
