business to make a decision that IT can’t implement, or IT to develop a set of applications or deploy a set of systems that doesn’t align with the business. So what you need is considerable information and visibility across all of the steps of the lifecycle, or what we call lifecycle traceability. You need the teams to collaborate around the same set of information and the same business goals, in what we call in-context collaboration. Rational Team Concert, which encourages collaborative lifecycle management with tools for planning, project reporting, process workflow, work-item management, source-code management and build management, offers that sort of in-context collaboration. We’ve seen very strong adoption of lifecycle management and lifecycle tooling in the mainframe environment. Rational Team Concert Enterprise Extensions has been one of the strongest features of the Team Concert family, and to me, that’s an indication customers are not only recognizing the need to manage the lifecycle, but that they’re doing it, and the mainframe is a central platform for them to do so in a multiplatform manner. Q. With the recent advancements in mainframe technology, including the addition of the new zEnterprise System and Windows support, do you think the mainframe will remain vital in the years to come? A. Absolutely. We’ve invested decades of innovation into the System z and zEnterprise systems in large-scale, high-volume transaction processing, and high-volume data management. It shouldn’t be any surprise that mainframes are used by 64 percent of U.S. Fortune 500 companies and 71 percent of global Fortune 500 companies. That represents a pretty broad range of mainframe users. And because this environment is going to last for decades, we’re very focused on the next generation of developers. To that end, we started the IBM Academic Initiative with 23 academic institutions in 2003, which has now grown to more than 1,000 institutions worldwide. Within the program, we have an annual competition called Master the Mainframe where students around the world learn skills to make them more competitive for jobs in enterprise computing. In 2011, we had nearly 12,000 students participate in the contest. So, yes, the mainframe ecosystem will continue to be vital. We’re investing in advancing our compiler technology, and you’ll see significant updates to our traditional COBOL, PL/I and C/C++ compilers with strong middleware integration and a focus on performance and exploitation of new hardware platforms. We’ve also brought new technology to the mainframe time and again. From WebSphere* to Java*, it’s all available and running in the mainframe environment. I would add that this is a major focus for us on IBM Power Systems. We see tremendous improvements in terms of

raw performance of applications that use compilers, and those compilers used in conjunction with the middleware on AIX and Linux, as exhibited by Watson and IBM smarter-computing initiatives. Q. To some people, this may appear to be all about technology, but is it actually more about business? A. In my view, development is always about the business. The true focus is on enabling the teams that drive innovation through software, which then drives and enables business outcomes. And as we’ve discussed here, it’s also about continuously revitalizing applications, empowering people, unifying teams and optimizing infrastructure to deliver value to businesses. For instance, smarter computing represents a new way of looking
