“A large North American bank conducted a very detailed analysis of its existing applications and was able to reduce the number of applications it had in service from about 600 to 147. That’s significant.”

analysis, but also different platforms, like the mainframe and distributed systems such as z/OS*, Linux* for System z*, IBM i, AIX*, Linux and Windows*. Q. How are issues such as divergent skills affecting development and innovation? A. If you have a fragmented development environment, you often lose information in the handoff between one environment and the other. For example, we see developers in some UNIX* and mainframe environments relying on green-screen tools versus new GUI tools that are more common in distributed environments. This results in skills gaps. IBM has addressed this challenge by offering the Rational Developer family of products, which provides a very modern, very integrated environment for multiplatform development that takes advantage of all the effort we’ve put into the Eclipse platform. It provides an appealing environment for developers,

regardless of whether they develop on the mainframe, Power Systems* or distributed environments. The environment also spans multiple types of applications—from developing COBOL and PL/I applications to building mobile and Web 2.0-style user interfaces—and everything in between. What we’ve seen is that customers who use such an environment have experienced significant improvements in developer productivity—in some cases, as much as 22 to 37 percent. UniCredit, a very large bank, has seen developer productivity improve by approximately 15 percent. [To learn more, go to http://bit.ly/Ahfa2O.] Using the same programming tools to work on multiple different application types allows programming teams to move from project to project very quickly. We have another very interesting set of capabilities in the Rational Developer for System z Unit Test that offers an agile and iterative

workstation-based development environment. Offloading early compilation and unit tests can result in a significant reduction in CPU usage and improved cost savings for our customers. From a Power Systems* perspective, we have also seen tremendous uptake of Rational Developer for Power Systems, especially for use in the IBM i environment. That’s why we’re investing our multiplatform development tools and treating the System z, zEnterprise* and Power Systems for AIX, Linux and IBM i as ongoing sources of value to enterprises. We’ve come to understand the importance of not only the tools you give to your developers, but also the processes across the entire lifecycle. That’s why we integrate the capabilities of application lifecycle management. We actually call that collaborative lifecycle management because many of the capabilities we give to our customers and their development teams involve collaboration across different roles and different platforms within the development process. Q. Given some of the complexities you’ve mentioned, how does one manage efforts such as this? A. Application lifecycle management extends from business-oriented decisions to development based on these decisions, and ultimately, to the proper deployment of decisionbased solutions. Application lifecycle management helps you manage each of these work streams in order to achieve the business agility you need to both accelerate these steps and link them together. You wouldn’t want the line of
