multiple copies of Linux for System z in virtual guest machines under z/VM. A single mainframe is capable of hosting thousands of OS instances through this virtualization technology.

2. z/OS Includes a UNIX Component z/OS is the operating system most people think of when considering the mainframe. It’s capable of hosting multiple concurrent applications with full memory protection and sophisticated shared-resource-allocation mechanisms. It’s used in many government installations as well as most large corporations around the world. What you might not know is that z/OS has a UNIX* component called UNIX Systems Services (USS). It’s a certified POSIX-compliant UNIX interface that relies on underlying z/OS services to perform the called actions. USS is part of z/OS. Many key mainframe middleware solutions have elements that rely on USS, such as IBM DB2* for z/OS, IBM WebSphere* MQ for z/OS and WebSphere Application Server for z/OS. 3. Linux for System z In addition to z/OS, the mainframe is capable of running Linux. Red Hat and SUSE distributions are available. They operate with a kernel that understands the underlying hardware architecture. Applications written to run on Linux will run on Linux for System z because the kernel abstracts hardware specifics from the higher-level applications. Linux for System z may run directly on the hardware in an LPAR

The BEST-KEPT SECRET of all is the z/OS capability to host HTTP servers to serve Web content.
or virtualized in a guest on z/VM. The latter approach involving guest virtual machines is a popular way of consolidating workloads to a smaller server platform footprint. It’s also a key part of IBM’s cloud-computing strategy for System z. z/OS. The SDK has Java technologycompatible test suites and carries the logo showing it’s Java compatible. It’s available in 31-bit and 64-bit editions. At the application-interface layer, Java on z/OS is like Java on any other platform. However, where Java interfaces with z/OS and System z hardware, key platform exploitation takes place. For example, the IBM SDK for z/OS, Java Technology Edition, V7.0.0 has an awareness of the IBM zEnteprise* processor design and takes advantage of it for performance reasons. Java applications are seamlessly portable across platforms with comparable IBM Java release levels present. That makes it possible to develop and test Java applications on workstations and deploy them on the mainframe.

4. TCP/IP Networking The modern mainframe is a strong participant in TCP/IP networking, moving well beyond systems network architecture (SNA) and 3270. It’s capable of connecting to a TCP/IP network and presenting itself as another TCP host on the network. For more than a decade, z/OS has had TCP/IP support, which is flexible and robust. It supports IPv4 or IPv6, multiple TCP stacks, virtual IP addressing, and Parallel Sysplex* environment-aware features, such as virtual IP addresses, which can be dynamically re-hosted to another LPAR in the sysplex. In addition to TCP/IP, today’s mainframe supports such popular access protocols as Telnet, TN/3270, FTP, SSH, secure FTP and secure copy protocol. Those who are comfortable with UNIX may remotely access the mainframe using familiar methods and tools, including the vi editor and the UNIX shell commands awk and grep. 5. Java IBM provides a full-function Java* software development kit (SDK) for

6. Web Serving and Beyond Perhaps the best-kept secret of all is the z/OS capability to host HTTP servers to serve Web content. The original IBM HTTP Server, commonly known as the Domino* Go Webserver (DGW), was based on the CERN httpd standard. That HTTP server is still available, though functionally stabilized. A newer HTTP server, based on the open-source Apache Web service is also available. HTTP servers on z/OS are capable of serving static as well as dynamic content with FastCGI. The WebSphere Application Server is IBM’s flagship Java EE application platform. It’s available for z/OS as well as Linux for System z. This server
