IS DRIVING REPLACEMENT OF MONOLITHIC APPLICATIONS WITH MODULAR COMPONENTS.
functions for configuration, service and operational control, providing a point of management integration to tie zEnterprise servers and associated zBX extensions together. SEs are, of course, fully redundant within the servers. SE functions are exposed via hardware management consoles (HMCs). The HMC maintains network connections to the SEs of the systems to be managed. Both components are required for system operation, and both have been extended dramatically for zEnterprise. PSCN. Similarly, firmware controls interfaces on System x and POWER7 blades, and hypervisors are accessible to the SE over the INMN. Redundant switching is provided for these networks, which are physically isolated from other networks, secure and inaccessible from hosted OSs. Configuration, monitoring and management are automated by zManager firmware. HMCs are connected to SEs within zEnterprise ensembles over customermanaged external networks. Usually, dedicated management networks are used to provide isolation. Integrated firewall support helps prevent unauthorized connections to these networks. By contrast, the intraensemble data network (IEDN), a 10 GB layer-2 network, provides any-to-any connectivity for use by business application software running within an ensemble. It uses no external switches and includes no layer-3 network routing. All IEDN components are encapsulated within the zEnterprise infrastructure and configurable only through zManager. The private and secure nature of the IEDN can eliminate the need for firewalls and encryption between components hosted within an ensemble. zManager provides the means to dynamically provision virtual LANs (VLANs) over the physical IEDN fabric. Controls are provided to manage VLAN lifecycles and interconnect virtual servers hosted within the ensemble. Because the hypervisors are system firmware, accessible solely over zEnterprise management networks, the virtual network switches are inaccessible from untrusted software; only authorized virtual servers can use specific virtual networks. Servers within ensembles can be network-connected to authorized outside systems through external layer-3 routes using network interface ports on extended open systems adaptors and System z network open system adapter cards, both physically isolated from the IEDN ports. External network traffic is mapped to VLANs within the IEDN and kept isolated from other IEDN traffic.

Ensembles The HMC-SE management structure enables zEnterprise systems to be grouped into system clusters or ensembles. Within ensembles, the systems are referred to as zEnterprise nodes. Each ensemble defines a resource domain under the control of an HMC’s advanced management functions. Eight zEnterprise nodes can be managed within each ensemble. Fully populated ensembles can include 640 cores of z196 capacity with more than 14,000 cores of POWER7 or System x capacity in various combinations across 896 blades. Networking zEnterprise configurations include networks serving distinct and specific roles. The private system control network (PSCN) and intranode management network (INMN) are combined into a 1 GB layer-2 Ethernet network carrying zManager control and data flows and is used exclusively for management functions. Each BladeCenter H presents management interfaces for hardware configuration and operational control, made available to zManager over the

zManager’s Role Typically, IT systems are made up of hardware and software components that can be described as layers of a stack, where each depends on the layer below. The lowest layer consists of physical elements: physical server, storage and network hardware. It forms the basis for system firmware and virtualization mechanisms such as hypervisors, which host virtual representations of physical resources. Virtual servers are logical containers hosting instances of software, themselves layered compositions of OSs, middleware and application software that form the remaining layers of a stack. Each layer provides management tooling with responsibility for its associated resources, often implementing a distinct administrative model. A well-integrated and well-behaved management system would unite management capabilities at each layer to provide management and governance of the entire system. The zManager provides resource management functions for physical and virtual infrastructure layers of the stack, dedicated to allocation, configuration, monitoring, management and optimization of physical and virtual servers; as additionally it provides storage,
