TAKEAWAY

HÁÁBM’s Smarter Planet initiative can’t I

happen within traditional approaches to IT that add sprawl while limiting integration and responsiveness to customer needs.

IBM Global Mirror and Metro Mirror enable mutual failover between the data centers, which are separated by 1,000 kilometers for disaster-protection and business resilience. The move reduced paymentprocessing costs by 95 percent, saving $400 million annually, and decreased workload for technical staff by 85 percent and labor costs by up to 70 percent. Server and data-center consolidation created further savings on hardware and software licensing and maintenance and electricity, as well as increasing security.

HÁÁnstead, smarter computing can increase I

IT capacity and deliver actionable insights from data while holding costs flat.

HÁÁ onsolidating workloads, redeploying them C
and deploying new workloads are three ways to leverage optimized systems for smarter computing.

HÁÁ marter-computing capabilities are S

available now and they’re not just for the biggest enterprises.
DOUG BROWN

Redeploying Workloads
The second strategy companies are often most eager to adopt, Brown says, is to improve performance for workloads through virtualization and integrate data so they can get to a single view to do better analytics. Redeploying workloads to be more efficient and useful, in turn, frees them to improve service levels to the enterprise. Virtualizing servers to drive up utilization is another benefit of reconfiguring workloads. Using the zEnterprise* System and IBM middleware, IT administrators can create an enterprise cloud through deep integration, consolidate workloads and collapse infrastructures, and integrate real-time data modeling and operational

data. “There’s less data center to manage, so you reduce headaches and labor costs,” Brown says. “And it becomes a much simpler environment with less security vulnerabilities, through which it’s easy to offer new, innovative forms of services back to the client.” At the University of Massachusetts, for example, the physics department found its Intel* Xeon processor-based servers were too slow in running some of its critical calculations. It deployed an IBM BladeCenter S chassis with two IBM BladeCenter PS701 Express blades running the Red Hat Enterprise Linux* operating system. Each blade has eight cores at three GHz for a total of 16 cores. The department then tested two separate applications on the PS701 blades and the Xeon servers. The first

application ran five times faster on the blade servers, and the second ran eight times faster. Calculations that used to take a month now run in less than a week.

Deploying New Workloads
Optimized systems let companies grow faster and create business opportunities by deploying new workloads. For example, Primerica Inc. is the largest independent financial-services marketing company in North America with a sales force of 142,000, which serves 4.3 million life insurance clients and more than 2.4 million investment clients. Primerica wanted to add new capabilities to Primerica Online, its passwordprotected, customer-facing website, to help representatives interact with data in a more timely way. Its old system wasn’t ideal, requiring representatives to run multiple queries and filters for different subjects and delivering results in static PDF documents. Primerica was convinced that more dynamic capabilities would help it increase productivity and boost revenue. Using the IBM Cognos* business-intelligence (BI) platform, the company enhanced its Primerica Online portal, enabling it to dynamically drill down into sales data, offer online commission statements and identify other representatives who need help with their performance, all in a fraction of the time it used

CRITICAL ELEMENTS OF SMARTER COMPUTING

Smarter computing has three critical elements that provide the foundation for the data center of the future:
1. It’s designed for data—removing barriers to harnessing all available information and unlocking insights. 2. It’s tuned to the task—driving greater performance and efficiency for each workload and removing financial barriers. 3. It’s managed in the cloud—taking computing out of the box to enable rapid delivery of new services and reinvent business processes to drive innovation.
