Q&A
Q: How does IBM’s Smarter Planet initiative translate into ROI and competitive advantage? A: IT now has the opportunity to play an even greater role in driving business transformation by enabling innovative new business opportunities and models, new ways to deliver technology-based services, and new ways to understand the world. When you design IT as a holistic system that incorporates big data (data from traditional and new sources) for better decision making, optimized systems for superior economics, and the cloud to reinvent business processes and drive innovation, your ROI and competitive advantage can be exponentially better. Smarter computing for IBM ultimately means helping clients extract stronger IT economics and potentially change the pace of business, competition and business innovation. The need for
smarter computing is surfacing because the current model of perpetually increasing capacity and capability can quickly become financially unsustainable. Our goal is to help any enterprise innovate while doubling IT capacity on a flat budget.

Guru Rao, IBM Fellow and chief systems engineer, IBM Systems and Technology Group

Q: What’s the best way to implement Smarter Planet technologies in your business? A: There’s no prescriptive recipe that fits all client environments, but when you construct a computing agenda around business requirements and business objectives, that’s when you can align IT around business value and innovation. The best way to get started is to treat smarter computing as a strategic IT roadmap for the way

technology is accessed, applied and architected. The strategic focus for IT access will be ubiquitous mobile devices, and they’ll create massive volumes of information every day. The focus will be for integrating information from many sources of data and the creation of insight from that data for individual users; and for moving from heterogeneous silos to integrated, flexible infrastructures composed of workload-optimized systems. In each of these areas, clients can start taking initial steps in the strategic direction.

Q: What are some recommended
best practices for implementing Smarter Planet technology? A: The goal has to be to architect an IT infrastructure that’s designed for data, tuned to the task and managed as a cloud. When you design a network

Challenge: Located in
the southern Italian region of Puglia, an area with an economy primarily based on small and mid-sized agriculture and food products, the Università di Bari wanted to build a system that would help enable local fishers, wine growers and others to contract for services through a portal to reduce time to market, transportation costs and product waste, and improve overall product quality. solution that leverages System z* technology, IBM software, storage and Global Technology Services. This solution enables the university to deliver heavy-duty computing power at minimal cost to the local community through an IBM mainframe and cloud computing.

provision servers for use by the company’s community of more than 20,000 internal application developers was limiting its ability to rapidly develop innovative products and services for its customers. Solution: Citigroup
implemented a private development cloud based on an IBM CloudBurst* appliance, enabling automated provisioning of development servers. The solution is integrated with the company’s self-service portal to streamline developer requests for provisioning. Image-based standard OS deployments with predefined middleware stacks facilitate development and testing processes. Service-

delivery processes supported by IBM Tivoli* software enable automated administration, patch management and use accounting. The combination of infrastructure as a service and software as a service provides new levels of flexibility in service delivery. Provisioning requests that once took as long as 45 days are now fulfilled in less than 20 minutes, shrinking development lifecycles and speeding time to market for innovations that enhance the customer experience. Automated service-delivery processes have dramatically reduced administrative overhead and improved systems administrator ratios. —M.S.
