192 MB is shared among all of the processor cores on the book, representing a quadruple increase in book-level cache compared to the z10. This greatly reduces the need to retrieve data and instructions from memory. A z196 can be configured with up to four books. Instructions and data can be moved between the books via connections at the L4 layer, with each book having a direct connection to all other books. HiperDispatch exploitation. First introduced with the System z10, the HiperDispatch function is significantly enhanced to exploit the memory hierarchy design of the z196. It is a tight cooperation of the Processor Resource/ Systems Manager* hypervisor and z/OS* to optimally dispatch work across the cores of a processor. With HiperDispatch, tasks (threads) will be redispatched within small clusters (affinity nodes) of cores to increase the effectiveness of the processor caches. For the z196, HiperDispatch builds its nodes to align with the topology of the L3 caches. In this way, Significantly more performance benefits are accrued on the z196 from HiperDispatch, particularly for workloads with diverse reference patterns to instructions and data.

System z processors, and the design of the z196 provides something for everyone. Take a brief look at the factors that contribute to workload performance:
Instruction complexity.

of activity to this part of the memory hierarchy. The higher the RNI, the deeper the processor must go to retrieve the instructions and data for that workload. The RNI is influenced by many factors, including:

Something for Everyone So how do these traits translate to outstanding workload performance? Many different workloads run on

The type of instructions and the sequence in which they are executed will interact with the design of a microprocessor to affect a performance factor we can define as instruction complexity. With its out-oforder design, enhanced branch prediction and 5.2 GHz clock rate, the z196 improves this component of performance for all workloads right out of the box. Additionally, as compilers exploit this design and tap into the use of more than 100 new instructions, further improvements will accrue. Relative nest intensity. Workload performance is quite sensitive to how deeply the processor must go into the memory hierarchy to retrieve its instructions and data for execution. Best performance occurs when the instructions and data are found in the caches nearest the processor core so that little time is spent waiting prior to execution; as instructions and data must be retrieved from farther out in the hierarchy, the processor spends more time waiting for their arrival. The most performance-sensitive area of the memory hierarchy is the activity to the memory-hierarchy nest, namely the distribution of activity to the shared caches and memory. The relative nest intensity (RNI) quantifies the level

hÁThe nature of the workload hÁThe locality of reference hÁThe task dispatch pattern hÁI/O intensity
For example, a diverse reference pattern, frequent and short-duration dispatches, and high I/O rates are all characteristics of high-RNI workloads. The number and activity level of z/OS images or virtual guests under z/VM that share a processor will also influence the RNI. A large number of images or guests creates more competition for the shared caches and memory buses, resulting in a higher RNI. The new L3 cache and four-times larger book-level L4 cache on the z196 greatly benefit workloads with high RNI.

What’s Not to Love? What type of workload loves to run on the z196? A CICS/DB2 application with heavy data references creating a high RNI will appreciate the large caches. WebSphere application servers with intense CPU activity and low RNI will adore the high GHz and out-of-order microprocessor. A large number of virtual guests under z/VM will also love the large shared caches. These are only a few examples, but clearly no matter what performance factor characterizes the workload, the z196 has something for it.
