is a System z hallmark.
Manager, in a hybrid system. Blades can provide appropriate hosting for a number of stateless applications that need multicore, multithreaded parallelism and in this environment can be virtualized, consolidated and managed as a single resource pool. The zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager can handle multiple application components across a hybrid (application, data server, Web server) under one policy to drive service-level agreement/SLO attainment across all three of these tiers. Each of these takes advantage of native System z hardware virtualization capabilities to provide state-of-the art sharing of processor, memory and I/O resources and the capabilities necessary to host guest virtual-machine personalities on System z, including z/OS and Linux environments. Virtual resource management is a core feature of the zEnterprise platform. An integrated management appliance with easy-to-use wizards provides support for the management tasks and controls required for the dynamic provisioning of virtual resources. This makes it easy to instantiate and configure resources to host business applications. The tasks for provisioning virtualized servers, networks and storage resources can be combined to provide the overall infrastructure lifecycle management needed to host multitiered, heterogeneous business services across the zEnterprise environment. Advanced virtualization-management features, such as user-directed, policy-driven live virtual-guest mobility and autonomic virtual-guest-placement services, are planned as future capabilities.

Virtualization and Management Resource virtualization and sharing for greater system efficiency with economies of scale is a System z hallmark. These world-class capabilities deliver superior function and performance, setting a standard by which to measure other computing platforms. Well-managed virtualized IT infrastructures form the basis of service-oriented approaches to IT service delivery that are key to enabling cloud computing. Virtualization now provides the basis for ultimate flexibility, dynamic configuration and optimization of the IT infrastructure, providing lower cost and complexity with on-demand allocations of IT infrastructure to meet dynamic business requirements. zEnterprise Systems include integrated virtualization. The Processor Resource/Systems Manager* (PR/SM) type-1 hypervisor, integrated with all System z models, transforms physical resources into virtual LPARs sharing physical resources. The z/VM OS can be deployed as a hypervisor to provide additional system virtualization for second-level guests.

contextually related to deployed business services can provide superior operational insight and optimization aligned with the goals and priorities of business work being performed. Workload awareness is especially valuable in the zEnterprise System, which is aimed at hosting distinct and varied business workloads on a highly virtualized yet shared physical infrastructure. And since the zEnterprise System is an integration of heterogeneous components within an IT infrastructure, it’s uniquely positioned to optimize deployed workloads across the entire spectrum of heterogeneous IT resources it comprises. The System z platform continues to drive its strategy across these areas. The foundation is the data and extending traditional OLTP capabilities to embrace analytics. Architecture and design for the System z stack (hardware, OS and middleware) are focused on extending IBM’s leadership in hosting data while meeting and exceeding stringent requirements. As you look to consolidate data to minimize risk and meet regulations, know that the System z mainframe will evolve to meet these new requirements.

Jose Castano, an IBM director, is responsible for overall System z Technology and Strategy. He has a varied z/OS development background, including Parallel Sysplex, technical support, design and architecture, various ease-of-use initiatives for z/OS, and e-business. Jeff Frey, an IBM Fellow, is the CTO for System z. One of the founding architects of System z Parallel Sysplex, he is responsible for the ongoing architecture and design of IBM’s next-generation mainframe.

Clear Objective A principal zEnterprise platform objective is to facilitate the management of physical and virtualized infrastructure resources in a way that is aligned with your business objectives. This suggests the need for an “outside-in” perspective on how IT resources are used, and how they might be optimally managed to meet the SLOs of the business functions the system hosts. Resource-management systems that correlate how IT systems are used and
