ingrained into System z for decades, but we have renewed focus on workload management across virtualized resources to ensure end-to-end SLO attainment.

Data Serving z/OS* on the zEnterprise System is designed to be the ultimate data server. Data integrity and security are built into the system stack, from the silicon to the middleware. LPAR technology on the z196* is Evaluation Assurance Level 5 (EAL5)-certified, the highest certification for generalpurpose computing. Integrated encryption extensions provide the new capabilities required by government and industry regulation. Data serving requires the ability to handle large amounts of data concurrently. Dedicated I/O processors handle the largest data-serving demands while providing the most important workloads priority access to data, while comprehensive data management forms a key part of z/OS. Business-continuity capabilities support on-site, local and geographically dispersed options with recovery time objectives (RTOs) and recovery point objectives (RPOs) to match business requirements. Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex* (GDPS) protects both System z and distributed data assets. IBM continues to extend these geographically dispersed business-continuity solutions while integrating them across zEnterprise and System z BladeCenter* Extensions (zBX). Analytics and Data Warehousing Analytics is a direct extension of data serving. The notion that data servers can only be focused on operational data and transactions is outdated. Data-serving platforms must provide both transactional and analytics capabilities while ensuring

mission-critical workload SLOs are met. Progressively more transactions include analytics. One classic example is fraud detection. Another is deriving additional sales opportunities from customer buying habits at checkout. The System z mainframe has significantly improved its data warehousing and analytics portfolio. InfoSphere* Warehouse, Cognos*, SPSS*, and Information Server for System z are examples of products providing comprehensive data warehousing and analytics capabilities. Last year, we announced the IBM Smart Analytics System for System z, a total data-warehousing and businessintelligence (BI) solution, and introduced the IBM Smart Analytics Optimizer* (ISAO), which can accelerate DB2* for z/OS queries by up to 80 times— transparently to applications. This allows DB2 for z/OS data management with all of its capabilities while providing cost-effective analytics using operational data and data warehouses. The z196 is also well-positioned for analytics workloads. The state-of-the-art 5.2 GHz processor, with out-of-order execution and dedicated floating-point processors, provides an ideal platform for complex queries and analytics, even as its larger cache structures are a perfect match for data serving. Combine this raw horsepower with Parallel Sysplex* clustering and the result is the industry’s most scalable analytics and dataserving platform. zEnterprise hybrids provide options for hosting data warehouses and analytics. The right choice won’t always be a single architecture, but will depend on workload requirements. With zEnterprise, you can place analytics where most appropriate. You can use virtual images on the z196 server, use

the combination of the z196 server and ISAO, or put the workload on zBX.

Application Serving Hosting applications and data in appropriate virtual and physical servers is a critical factor in end-to-end workload management, virtualization and SLO attainment. Batch and other heavy-insert applications require close data proximity. Hosting them within the same virtual server is critical. Applications for which locality of reference is less important can be appropriately hosted on other virtual servers within the same physical server or elsewhere within a zBX. z/OS can host multiple workloads, and provides unique opportunities. Hosting applications in the same virtual image as database servers can provide performance, security, virtualization, and workload management advantages. Shared memory can eliminate network connections between applications and databases and allow shared security contexts to ensure proper access controls. The sweet spot for z/OS is highly integrated applications for which transactional integrity, recoverability, and data proximity are critical. Linux* for System z is another option. Hosting applications and their databases on the same physical servers allows the use of HiperSockets* to map TCP/IP over memory across virtual images to improve performance, security and resilience. Coupling this with the consolidation capabilities of Linux for System z under z/VM* hypervisors provides a very cost-efficient applicationserving solution. This open, multivendor environment offers rapid application hosting supported by best-of-breed virtualization to provide an unparalleled platform for hosting and consolidating Linux servers. zBX provides a third choice for application serving: the ability to connect Power* and System x* blades to the z196, managing them from one point of control through the Unified Resource
