Closer and Seamless The administrative and maintenance issues that are driving much of this mainframe adoption are only part of the story. Core capabilities such as business analytics that support regulatory compliance are another. If organizations want a near real-time glimpse into the here and now of how their operations are running, they need to move their businessanalytics solutions closer to their operational systems. “I recently spoke with a customer in the insurance industry who told me, ‘I know everything about fraud in my business. I know exactly what it looks like. The problem is, I may not see it until it’s six months too late,’ ” Barel notes. “That comment stuck with me, because it summarized a lot of challenges other companies are facing. You need a better interlock between business analytics and the transaction you’re processing.” One way of addressing this is by breaking down IT silos. Many companies are beginning to do that thanks to the ability to run multiple workloads and applications on a single system. One such organization is Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina (BCBSSC), which consolidated hundreds of Linux applications on its mainframe and then integrated them with its back-end processing, creating a seamless flow of data available to the right people at the right time. “When you look at business processes, they’re typically multitiered or multiarchitected, but at the end of the day, they still represent one business process,” remarks Reilly. “So when you break down those silos, people who may have had no

contact with each other before are now actively collaborating.” In the case of BCBSSC, this type of workflow simplification also resulted in better regulatory compliance. For example, it achieved full Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) certification and, while doing so, met various levels of certification for other standards. Without having taken steps to integrate its many disparate systems, this might not have been the case.

Trickling Down Although BCBSSC represents a large example of this trend toward consolidation and integration, Barel notes that “the challenges surrounding compliance, the ability to monitor IT environments, are very much trickling down to the mid-size market.” One such example involves Canada-based Payment Solution Providers (PSP) Inc. The company, which specializes in smart-card solutions, e-payment networks and the integration of processing systems related to financial transactions, was saddled with a sprawling IT environment that included many stand-alone servers running just as many instances of the Oracle database. As with JPN, Garanti Bank and BCBSSC, it was having issues related to the maintenance and cost of the resulting server and data sprawl. And like BCBSSC, it also wanted to comply with industry standards, which in this case included the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). PSP knew, though, that its existing infrastructure might not have been secure enough to meet the rigorous requirements of the PCI DSS.

With that in mind, PSP decided to look for options that would help it streamline its computing environment. Choosing the mainframe enabled it to both simplify and secure its IT infrastructure—and therefore meet the PCI security standards. The company’s move allowed it to not only save 35 percent in IT costs as compared to its previous distributed computing environment, but also begin offering software as a service (SaaS) and other new services. In PSP’s instance, the organization virtualized everything, and it delivers its chip authentication in a SaaS model, integrating its clients’ existing banking infrastructure and their card providers.

Economic Growth Another big trend involves cloud computing, and the University of Bari in Italy has made big steps in that direction. A member of the DAISY-Net consortium of universities and information and communications companies in northern Italy, its goal is to collaborate in the economic and industrial growth in the region. To that end, it chose a mainframe capable of supporting hundreds of instances of Linux to support its cloud-computing environment. One of DAISY-Net’s most creative cloud-driven initiatives involves providing touch-screen devices that fishermen can install on their boats so they can report in real time on what types of fish they’re catching. That information is then shared with potential customers, including local markets and restaurants, which can then bid on the fish while the boats are still on the water. Once purchases are finalized, the fishermen
