IT Today
Transaction Management and Connectivity On the transaction and connectivity side, you can expect greater flexibility, availability, resilience and security. IMS Connect—the TCP/IP gateway to IMS transactions, operations and data—delivers key enhancements. The MSC TCP/IP link increases bandwidth and performance. Enhanced commands, shared queues crosscoupling facility (XCF), and centralized repository support simplify operations and improve availability. Internal performance testing of IMS 12’s shared-queues enhancements demonstrated double-digit gains in ITR. Open transaction manager access (OTMA) synchronous shared-queues enhancement shows 63-percent ITR path length improvement for SYNCLVL=NONE using XCF, and a whopping 81-percent ITR path length improvement for SYNCLVL=CONFIRM using XCF. Likewise, the advanced
program-to-program communication (APPC) synchronous shared-queues enhancement averaged a 78-percent reduction in CPU utilization for both back-end and front-end IMS systems. logging, which uses sequential access method (SAM) striping, demonstrate SAM striping can potentially double IMS 12 transaction throughput.

Systems Management On the systems side, IMS 12 introduces the IMS repository, which provides a single centralized store for resource definitions in an IMSplex, simplifying the management of resource definitions. Both the IMS catalog and IMS repository will make operations and management simpler. Logger improvements abound, with online log data sets (OLDSs), system log data sets (SLDSs) and write-ahead data sets (WADSs) delivering increased volume and improved bandwidth. Internal testing revealed a 10-percent improvement in WADS device response time, compared to IMS 11, with the same full-function highavailability large database workload. The enhancements for online data set

Quality Partnership Program
The IMS* Quality Partnership Program (QPP) is unique in that some clients are in production with the new release even before GA. IMS 12 is no exception. One client, the IT firm GAD, was successfully in production 100 days before the GA date of Oct. 28. Others planned to go into production around the time of GA or by the end of 2011. So what are QPP members saying about IMS 12? The finance and insurance company Signal-Iduna shares: “With the IMS Repository and RDDS (resource definition data set) feature of DRD (dynamic resource definition), we can manage our system resources much more easily; change management is more efficient and faster.” Additionally, IT services provider Fiducia explains, “The IMS Repository and the (multiple systems coupling) MSC TCP/IP features in IMS 12 allow us easier maintenance; the IMS Repository will bring us more simplicity, security and reliability as we can share it between the systems.” —S.S.

Greater Simplicity Your business application that ran on IMS when it was introduced 40 years ago will still run safely on IMS 12. Yet the reality is that the time span after which applications must be updated grows shorter every year. To help deliver faster time to market with new and updated applications, IMS Enterprise Suite Explorer is provided alongside IMS 12 as part of IMS Enterprise Suite 2.1. Application developers and database architects will appreciate its lightweight, powerful, extensible framework, which integrates with other Eclipse-based solutions. Database administrators can expect 50-percent faster deployment of IMS resource definitions and database changes. The IMS repository delivered as part of the new release provides a centralized store for resource definitions for all IMS systems in an IMSplex that shares the resources. Resource changes can be made in the repository and rolled out to one or more active IMS systems, greatly simplifying the management of resource definitions. The IMS catalog provides information for other tools to enable fast, detailed impact analysis that can reduce the overall costs associated with adding new or changed databases or application programs into IMS. The catalog also offers a more flexible IMS Open Database solution as applications no longer need to maintain Java metadata classes, helping simplify new application development. Integration and Optimization IMS has historically had strong links with IMS Tools, Rational* Developer
