Trends Industry signals to keep you in the know Notable Improvements CICS TS V4.2 provides a balanced release for everyone By Nick Garrod ust two years ago, CICS* was celebrating 40 years as a program product and the release of a brand new version: CICS Transaction Server (TS) V4.1. Past versions have become known for their main capabilities: CICS TS V1 is known as the Web release, as it allowed CICS applications to populate Web pages for the first time, made e-business a whole new marketplace and put CICS users on the Internet. CICS TS V2 proved to be the Java* release, as it allowed people to grow their workplace and increase scalability. CICS TS V3 was the service oriented architecture (SOA) release; the Web services support made CICS a core of many SOA implementations and was probably one of the most successful releases in CICS history. The question now is: What will CICS TS V4 be remembered as? There’s been a lot of innovation over the last 15 years of CICS development, but what was happening to the traditional CICS workload? What was in it for the classic CICS user? Since CICS TS V1, threadsafe has continued to be extended to include more commands, performance improvements have been implemented with workload management, data transfer has been offered an alternative method to COMMAREAs with channels and containers, skills issues have been addressed with the CICS Explorer and various architectural changes have taken J 26 J U LY/AU G U S T 2 0 11 ILLUSTRATION BY MICHAEL MORGENSTERN
