Business Challenges
The top-of-mind business challenges of 2010, not surprisingly, focus on economics: 22 percent of readers worry about costs, plus an additional 13 percent mentioned a loss of financial resources. Conti says the new IBM zEnterprise System, announced in 2010 and now generally available, was built with these challenges in mind. The new systems architecture combines the zEnterprise 196 with new technologies—the IBM zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX) and the Unified Resource Manager (zManager)—that enables it to manage workloads running across System z and Power Systems* servers, and System x* blades. “We’re just at the forefront of zEnterprise. We have already delivered zBX with support for select POWER7* technologybased blades as well as the IBM Smart Analytics Optimizer and DataPower*,” she says. “You can expect zBX to support addi-

At least three quarters of readers have applications for backup and recovery, programming and application development. More than half of readers have security, networking communications, accounting, systems management, financial, and management applications in house. For a more complete breakdown of application adoption, see “There’s an App for That” (page 6). Art Louise, director of information systems with New York-based EmblemHealth, says these types of applications are commonplace in most mainframe IT departments.
