The multiplatform management capabilities enable clients to extend those benefits by collocating their business applications and data. Applications may be deployed on their optimum platform while integrating more closely to the required data. Beyond the immediate consolidation and performance benefits, clients can, for the first time, obtain an end-to-end management view across multiple platforms. “Organizations that use IT to transform their business ultimately reap the most benefits,” says IBM Fellow and Systems Chief Engineer Dr. Guru Rao. “Efficiency isn’t just looking at the front end, it’s looking at the front end and the back end and how they work together.”

Unifying Data and Applications Typically, enterprise business applications have two major subsystems: the database

The IBM Eagle Study found running core fit-for-purpose applications on the zEnterprise* System is overall less expensive than deployment on distributed platforms. Comparatively: Distributed TCO was almost double on distributed systems, even without considering software savings. Distributed software costs were 7 percent higher. Distributed hardware expenses were 32 percent higher. Distributed labor was 59 percent higher. Distributed yearly operating cost was 14 percent higher.
Source: IBM In the 47 clients represented in these offload TCO studies, not all chose to include every metric in their study as some metrics are not applicable to every situation. For example, clients who received free power (certain government entities) didn’t include electricity in their study because mainframe and distributed will be the same cost - $0.

and the applications that access the data. Frequently, the database is implemented on the mainframe. Many clients choose DB2* for z/OS for its data management and continuous-availability advantages, Rao explains. It’s common for companies to deploy their applications on non-mainframe platforms, such as Power Systems* servers running AIX. He says implementing the components on loosely connected distributed environments results in additional costs for the interconnect, lack of security due to the insertion of a public network between them, and the introduction of network latency between the data and the applications, as well as a lack of manageability across the whole. When the application is concurrently implemented with the data it accesses on the mainframe, significant benefits result. Some customers have already realized this and are collocating data and applications using Linux on System z. The zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager (zManager) and increased efficiencies of the zEnterprise 196 (z196) streamline the connectivity and have been developed to excel at Java* and Linux OS-based workloads. “The technology of the zEnterprise System could ultimately provide a deeper integration of data and applications with benefits similar to and better than the qualities achieved with Linux on System z integration,” Rao says. Data-analytic applications are ideal for this type of unified deployment. Doing so enables customers to get near real-time analysis—comparing customers/sales situations/partner situations against modeled profiles to determine the next most logical product to sell—increasing revenue per customer and customer satisfaction.

span across configuration, maintenance, security and more. In the case of service management, when any component in the zEnterprise System has an issue, the server places a call home to a single point of service. There’s also visibility into the system for problem determination, which doesn’t exist on other platforms. Similarly, firmware updates to any system are centrally managed. This reduces complexity and the level of operation staff associated with it. The zEnterprise System eliminates latency and security issues associated with resources not connected via the zManager private network that’s virtually immune to attack and isn’t impacted by network bandwidth. The zManager also enables policy-based management across the system-managed resources—further reducing demands on the administrator from mundane day-to-day activities, such as assigning virtual resources or managing energy efficiency. This frees employees for new projects that help the company keep up with exponential growth, meet dynamic business requirements and help the enterprise be more competitive.

Strategic Advantages Beyond the performance benefits, ease of management is key. The benefits

Endless Possibilities Although announced in third quarter 2010, zEnterprise System client adoption has already begun. “zEnterprise System capabilities were designed with significant client input,” Rao says. “The opportunity for zEnterprise server-based application deployment was highlighted as one of the highest priority and of highest value based on the client application profiles,” he adds. “Since the announcement, there’s been significant positive response from the clients.” For example, a global retail customer had a Power* server-based ERP financial application on the front end and DB2 for z/OS hosting data back end. The client also used a businessintelligence accelerator hosted on x86
