Focus on Storage
so it doesn’t disrupt what customers are already doing,” Nemechek says. “The way they’re backing up things is exactly the same, but they get the benefits of backing up to disk rather than physical tape. Now they can restore data quicker, back up jobs more reliably and do some powerful things with that data now that it’s on disk.” deduplication system can’t keep up, ProtecTIER will send a signal back to the mainframe requesting a slowdown until it can catch up. Most other solutions on the market don’t have that signaling mechanism, which increases the opportunity to lose data or skip data because it can’t communicate an overload, according to Nemechek.

Deduplication Defined
“Data deduplication examines the data that’s in a typical backup set—where there’s often redundant data—and finds ways to reduce it,” says Victor Nemechek, ProtecTIER* deduplication offering manager at IBM. He offers the example of a PowerPoint presentation that’s been emailed to 20 people. The backup application stores all 20 copies found on the system. Data deduplication identifies data that’s already been stored and, rather than use extra disk space, can store one copy and point to it for the other instances. Data deduplication technology also works at the byte level. “It’s any data that’s stored multiple times,” Nemechek says. “For example, let’s say there’s a corporate logo. And you might have that logo in PowerPoints, Word documents, on the Web—it’s everywhere and it doesn’t change based on where it is. Deduplication technology recognizes that it’s seen this chunk of data before and won’t write it again.” —T.D.

Tight Integration While other deduplication technologies exist, none are as tightly integrated as the IBM ProtecTIER solution. “Most other deduplication vendors have just gone to third-party companies that supply a convertor box to convert the I/O of a mainframe to open systems,” he says. “They just slap that box in between the mainframe and their deduplication system and say they’re ready for mainframe now.” IBM does mainframe deduplication without using third parties. “We’ve done it in-house working with the System z team,” Nemechek says. “We’ve also written some code that more tightly integrates the ProtecTIER box and the mainframe, making them communicate better and eliminating the kludginess of other vendors’ solutions.” The integrated communication component is a clear distinguishing benefit. For example, if the mainframe is sending a lot of data and the

Hashing It Out A main difference between the ProtecTIER solution and similar products in the marketplace is IBM’s HyperFactor technology. This unique and patented deduplication algorithm is quite different from the standard off-the-shelf hashing algorithms that exist in today’s marketplace. Hashing is an old technology that eats up space and often incorrectly stores data—causing data corruption, integrity problems and possible data loss. For every chunk of data it stores, hash-based methods must store hash information to track the data. While a burden, this method is workable if clients are only storing a small data amount. As data swells, hash tables slow performance and require extra capacity. That’s not the case with the IBM ProtecTIER solution. HyperFactor technology tracks up to a petabyte of storage with only 4 GB of RAM in what IBM calls an index file. “A

Traditionally, mainframe clients are generally more cautious of adopting new technology, but they are seeing that the benefits of deduplication and the replication that goes along with it are established, powerful tools.”

very small index file is all we need to keep track of a huge amount of storage. This avoids the problem that the hash-based solutions have,” Nemechek says. “Their hash tables can be tens of terabytes in size, which can be very unmanageable and slow down the systems. But no matter how much data you send the ProtecTIER solution, we won’t have a growing hash table, which enables us to have high performance and to scale the solution to large amounts of data.”
