STEP 3 Work Product
Development
At this point, we analyze the data and formulate our findings about the positioning of the technology platforms. We then build the weighted-guidance model by assig ning a specif ic numerical weight between one and 10 to each platform across each of the identified decision criteria. In our g uidance model, we weight two significant dimensions: platforms and application requirements. Platform ratings represent our consultant’s opinion of the strength or weakness of t he par t icular platform to each of the decision criteria. For example, the availability weighting may indicate a relatively lower availability for one platform but a higher availability for another in a given customer’s environment. These values depend on the study team’s assessment of the company’s operations, organization, process model, backup planning, capacity planning, etc. Application-requirement scores represent the importance, to the customer, of each of the decision criteria to the specific application. For example, are disaster recoverabilit y or scalabilit y important criteria to the customer for this application? A business-intelligence system that is populated with data extracted from production on a weekly cycle may not value disaster recoverability too highly. A businessc r it ica l, t r a n sac t ion- or iented, inventory-management system or financial-settlement application, on the other hand, may consider data loss from a disaster incident an intolerable risk. These weightings aren’t likely the same for each application, so

we make one copy of the guidance model for each application reviewed. Addit ionally, t hese weight ing s should be specific to each application, not for the company-standard wish list. Pages of definitions and documentation are often behind these categories based on SLAs, department and business objectives, and other IT drivers, thus the weightings should be considered unique to each application.

Exploit Your Resources
The Polaris Fit-for-Purpose Workshop can be conducted in combination with a Scorpion server-optimization study and any of the other Systems and Technology Group Laboratory Services Infrastructure Optimization study offerings. The Polaris study team can also provide a high-level incremental-cost element as well as a workload-profile analysis.

In either case, the IBM Polaris Workshop offers customers accurate comparisons of their current technology platforms. It highlights opportunities to fuel growth by factoring in the client’s environment, the process model and other technical and nontechnological realities in making deployment choices about new workloads and applications. The workshop can also help lower costs by further exploiting the strengths and capabilities of each currently implemented platform.

Rick Schoenmann is a certified senior managing financial consultant in IBM’s STG Laboratory Services Scorpion Server Optimization Team and is located in New York.
