virtualized systems. Then, they ran the same analysis using the new zEnterprise System, with its capability to run x86 and POWER* processor-based blades as well as System z* processors in a single footprint. This configuration consisted of seven IBM x86-based blades, nine BladeCenter * Extension (zBX) racks and five zEnterprise 196 (z196) servers in order to run the same set of workloads. The team studied five key IT processes that are involved in overall infrastructure administration: change management, deploy/release management, asset management, security management and incident/ capacity management. In the end, Bain concluded that the zEnterprise System

required 63-percent less labor cost than using a distributedserver infrastructure. While the number is impressive, he says the results aren’t really a surprise. “We expected it to be a significant number. Developing the model and using this scenario gives us a stronger degree of confidence to estimate the total cost of computing for various workloads.” Despite using such a large workload sample, the results are broadly applicable to customers of all sizes regardless of their industry affiliation, he adds.

Integrated platform management
All of these multiplatform components come preintegrated, which saves labor costs for installation, integration and verification. Once the system is in place, there’s less time required to monitor and manage it, he says.

End-to-end service management
In conjunction with the Tivoli* portfolio, businesses can utilize structured management in a centralized manner that again reduces the amount of labor required.

The zEnterprise Contribution
The multiplatform capabilities of the z196 server, when coupled with the zBX and Unified Resource Manager, provide three unique characteristics that impact the TCO and labor discussion across the IT processes Bain and his team studied:

Labor-Reduction Strategies
As a result of the study, the CPO also found strategies IT managers can employ to further reduce their labor expense across the management processes studied. Bain says those who consolidate, standardize and automate around the zEnterprise System will see the best results. In general, the smaller the number of physical servers administrators have to manage, the fewer the labor hours required. IBM mainframes are proven to be the ideal platform for large-scale consolidation, and this is underscored by t he zEnter pr i se Sy stem’s multiplatform-management capabilities. Consolidation may seem like an impossible task for companies with a lot of one-of-akind workloads. Bain says these workloads often share common

Fit-for-purpose computing
The zEnterprise System enables companies to run a variety of diverse workloads and put them on the execution platform that’s best suited to run those workloads—and do so with a single, centrally-managed environment. “That’s huge because it means you’ve got fewer servers to manage in a smaller footprint,” Bain says. Having fewer physical servers to manage reduces the overall IT labor expenses.

“The mistake IT buyers make is that they look at cost of acquisition, when they should consider all of the other things that go into purchasing a mainframe.”
