dramatic data-center simplification. Traditional z/OS* workloads are usually already best fit on z/OS. They continue to enjoy the benefits of lowest cost per unit of work done compared to any other deployment alternative. The zEnterprise System can extend the same cost advantages to a much broader set of workloads, including those traditionally hosted on distributed systems, reducing complexity and overall costs.

approach in a zEnterprise System and what cost savings can be achieved. To determine a best-fit deployment with the zEnterprise System, we needed to compare the cost per workload when workloads are consolidated onto the different virtualization platforms available on the new system. To calculate the cost per

workload we needed to know how many workloads can be consolidated onto a given deployment platform, and the cost of that platform. IBM started the study by running benchmarks to determine consolidation ratios that can be achieved on three different virtualization options available on the zEnterprise

Figure 1

The Case for Consolidation
An IBM-conducted case study looked at the cost per workload with a best-fit deployment on a zEnterprise System. The study shows the consolidation environment yields a 49 percent lower total cost of acquisition (TCA) compared to the current virtualized all-Intel environment. For more on this workload-based approach, see “A Best-Fit Approach,” page 26. The study looks at 500 distributed workloads currently deployed at varying levels of virtualization in an all-Intel environment. The workloads are broadly classified as light, heavy and heavy I/O workloads. The light workloads have relatively low transaction-throughput rates and don’t have any stringent quality of service requirements. The heavy workloads are multithreaded, compute-intensive applications. The heavy I/O workloads drive high numbers of I/O operations per second. The current environment consists of 77 Intel servers, a mix of Nehalem and pre-Nehalem Xeon machines. The light and heavy I/O workloads are running on virtualized servers. The heavy workload is so CPU intensive that only one of them can fit on an 8-way Nehalem server and is hence deployed without virtualization. The study examines whether we can optimize the deployment of these distributed workloads (summarized in Figure 1, right) using a best-fit
