nels, OSA-Express 3 channels, and a new DASD array(s), but run the same old, lower-performance and less energy-efficient 2003 technology serial-crossbar FICON directors and older IP networking equipment? Let’s look briefly at performance, energy efficiency and virtualization technology reasons for not doing so. money on the infrastructure, you want to know the vendor can walk the walk. Chances are that when you focus on performance, you’ll also make a significant improvement in the energy efficiency of your storage and data-center network. channel path identifier (CHPID) and physical-channel port location (PCHID) concepts. The bottom line with virtualization is: the new-technology FICON directors you purchase for performance reasons all offer some level

Virtualization
In the storage network, v irtualizat ion should either make it simpler to manage the fabric, allow for consolidation from older technology to new while minimizing changes to the I/O configuration data set

Performance
Serial-crossbar architecture FICON directors, such as the legacy McDATA 6xxx series directors, have performed admirably in mainframe data centers for nearly 10 years. However, they were designed for 1 Gbps and 2 Gbps FICON connectivity. Also, a serial crossbar-architecture director really maxes out at 140 ports in terms of performance at 2 Gbps. With serialcrossbar design, oversubscription is likely beyond 2 Gbps; and with the 6140 FICON director, while 4 Gbps was available, oversubscription was a large issue. Here we are at the beginning of 2011. If you buy FICON channels on the z196, they’ll be FICON Express 8 (8 Gbps). You’ll very likely want to run zHPF on some channels for DB2*, which means you can drive more I/O (about a 150 percent increase) down those channel paths than you could drive in traditional (command) FICON mode and you’ll get comparable or better performance in terms of bandwidth utilization. The latest FICON-switching technology will allow you to make full use of that performance, running 8 Gbps non-oversubscribed. But before buying, really examine the new directors. Gain a thorough understanding of their architecture, internal design and performance. Compare that to your existing technology. Ask if the vendor has staff who can discuss their performance with your team. When you spend

(IOCDS) or allow for scalability. The direction of storage networks is toward a common storage network for FICON and distributed-systems storage-area net works ( SA Ns) – protocol intermix mode or personal information manager (PIM). Virtualization should make that easier to implement. Virtualization for virtualization’s sake and implementing countless virtual SANs (VSANs) when you could just use zoning merely adds management complexity. Virtualization should allow you to take advantage of port counts greater than 256 ports per chassis, as you can implement multiple domain IDs in a chassis to handle the z/OS* addressing rules. Even better would be a director design that followed the logical channel subsystem (LCSS), of virtualization and implementing them w ill likely improve your energy efficiency. However, make use of virtualization if you need it to simplify management.

Energy Efficiency
If you’ve focused on improving performance and plan to use some level of virtualization, you’re going to improve your network/storage network energy efficiency to go along with the z196 and new storage. Here are some other points to keep in mind:

hÁ Challenge the vendors on their energy-efficiency claims for the respective directors/switching platforms. h Á Ask for apples-to-apples compar isons bet ween the new equipment you’re evaluating and
