Looking to 2015
oss Mauri, former Power Systems* general manager, is now responsible for enterprise-wide process transformation in support of the 2015 roadmap. “In that role, he’ll get to leverage a lot of his links with Systems and Technology Group (STG), the Software Group and the sales and services groups to ensure we’re on track for 2015,” says Tom Rosamilia, Power Systems and System z* general manager.

Q. What does this unification mean
for customers?

A. First, I think it’s important for clients

R

IBM Chairman of the Board and CEO Samuel J. Palmisano introduced the new roadmap to investors in May. Mauri says it’s a continuation of the path IBM has been on for the past four years. He says the 2015 roadmap includes four key growth initiatives:

1 2 3 4

Growth markets: IBM will continue to build its business worldwide, focusing to capture the highest-growth opportunities in the world’s emerging economies. Analytics: IBM has a broad analytics portfolio, developed organically and via acquisition, and has introduced new offerings allowing businesses to use analytics to improve business performance. The cloud and next-generation data center: IBM will continue to leverage new technologies such as cloud computing and virtualization to ensure IBM systems run highly automated and tuned workloads to meet the consumption and delivery models of tomorrow. Smarter Planet* solutions: The world is now instrumented, interconnected and intelligent and these purpose-built offerings from IBM infuse intelligence into the way the world actually works.

Mauri’s new role will help ensure IBM is continuously transforming business and processes to make them simpler, more efficient and more effective. “As IBM grows globally we can’t increase complexity for our employees and partners,” he says. This is a different view of IBM, says Marui, who has 20 years of experience in development and spent more than four years with the Power* Systems team. “I’m now looking within IBM and how we get things done, and thinking about how to improve that from an efficiency and effectiveness standpoint.” Mauri is ensuring IBM is doing what it suggests its customers do; taking elements of its Smarter Planet message and applying it to its own business. For example, Mauri says more than 100,000 IBM employees have access to the Blue Insight Cloud: the world’s largest private cloud for business analytics. “It’s easy-touse access to 100 internal-information warehouses and data stores that also provide analytics against the information,” he explains. “People have much more access to data and are able to improve their role based on that information.” Another example is IBM’s development test cloud. It’s a dynamic, self-service computing environment that allows a user to quickly provision a server or a group of servers, so they can develop and test software. Mauri says by the end of the 2010, 80 percent of IBM’s development teams will be using this environment. In the past it would have taken five days to provision a server. Now, developers can do it themselves at any time of day, and it’s up within an hour. “This allows STG to spend its money on leading-edge innovation and technology and takes out some of the infrastructure costs,” Mauri predicts. “It makes things easier for developers, so they can focus their time on innovation–which is really what matters most to clients, because that’s what’s going to bring them value.” – Natalie Boike

to know what it’s not about. It’s not about the merger of products. It’s not about the coming together of Power and System z servers. Our technology roadmap is one that was already on the path to do as much sharing as we could. So while both lines will continue to benefit from sharing assets like Power packaging and cooling or sharing the capability to use the same chip sets, personality-wise they still are two different product families. That will continue. Customers shouldn’t worry about losing the personality of the System z server or losing the personality of the Power platform because sharing is a journey that we’ve been on. In fact, it’s one where IBM excels. We’ve done it in software by reusing componentry and we’re doing it in STG by reusing componentry. What it does mean is the organizations can come together. We have shared challenges, some shared clients, shared issues and I think shared opportunities to do better. The organizational thoughts coming together are more of a functional alignment around demand generation and go-to market, or around how we approach our clients or help solve their problems—not around two products coming together.

Q. So you’re saying a merger of Power Systems and System z servers is not on the horizon? A. No, there’s no reason for that concern. This organizational change has nothing to do with these lines coming together. In fact, when you think about it, my boss, Rod Adkins, had responsibility for both platforms until recently and nobody said, “Hey, Rod, does this mean that since these two platforms report to you that they’re coming together?” The same thing should be true here. Now it’s just one level below Rod in the organization but the same organizations exist. Q. You’re not the only one with a new title. Can you talk about the people who’ve been appointed under you? A. Sure. When I got this job over both Power and System z teams, we wanted to make sure we had the right amount
