“Customers shouldn’t worry about losing the personality of the System z server or ... of the Power platform.”
—Tom Rosamilia, IBM System z and Power Systems general manager

Rosamilia started with IBM in 1983 as software developer and held several programming and management posit ions in t he mainf rame organization before becoming the general manager of the WebSphere* team. In 2009, Rosamilia was named IBM System z general manager. Now he adds Power Systems duties to his role. Rosamilia sat down with IBM Systems Magazine to reflect on his past experience with Power* technology and what’s to come.

Q. You’ve been with IBM for quite a while. How did you come to work with the Systems and Technology Group? A. Before I joined the mainframe team in the summer of 2009, I spent about nine years in the IBM Software Group (SWG). SWG’s products run across many different platforms, including the Power* platform, which now runs AIX, Linux and i. I joined a DB2* team—or Information Management as it’s now called—and my first challenge was to build a much stronger relationship between the database team and the System p* team. I started working closely with the Systems and Technology Group (STG) on a series of performance runs that SWG and STG were considering. I spent the first six months of that job teaming with the Power group to work on the biggest, baddest, best benchmark we could produce together. It was a fascinating and thrilling time for me to see the partnership we were beginning to form. Prior to that the teams were sort of working together but they didn’t really know one another. They needed somebody to be a matchmaker and I got to play that role. When I moved on to WebSphere development, of course, we worked closely with the Power team to increase our market share as part of Power Systems technology. As the Power

division began to take share from the other vendors, such as Sun and HP, we had even more reason to team up. Back in the day, a lot of Web-server deployments were around Solaris, which most of our customers were running. Over time, that has really shif ted, and t he Power Systems platform has gone from quite a distance back to being number one. I like to think the combination of SWG and STG really helped to drive that, although I give a lot of credit to my predecessors Rod Adkins, Adalio Sanchez and Ross Mauri for having led the team to the point of number-one market share.

Q. How do you think your experience has prepared you to oversee both System z and Power teams? A. Well first off, a lot of technology IBM invented appeared first on the System z platform. Back when we were just doing mainframes, those innovations earned us leadership on System z technolog y. Many of those people and those ideas began to contr ibute to the Power base. Partitioning, sharing data around cluster technologies and workload management are all things that, prior to me, were shared between these groups. I had a hand in developing some of that on System z technology back in the day but it was great for me to see it appear in a slightly different form that came to benefit the Power team. I also have an understanding that clients don’t care if something was done in SWG or STG. They want to know it was done and they’re going to get the reliability and scalability they expect. I can tell you that you can mess up scalability in hardware or software. You can mess up reliability in hardware or software. You need the combination of the two to really deliver to the client what he or she needs in the way of scale and availability.

Virtualization is an example. It’s a really important point that clients can take full advantage of our virtualization technologies that were invented 40 years ago on the mainframe. In large part, the competitors are trying to duplicate what we’ve already done. Sharing innovations between the Power and System z teams is a tremendous story and it’s one that predates me. I think my background is a really a good combination of software and hardware and the value of the stack. One of the things I look at is the value System z clients get from the software stack that runs on top of z/OS or Linux on System z. The same thing can be true—even more so—for Power if you see what we’ve been able to do around benchmarking and the announcement around pureScale* technology. These are good examples of teams teaming up to deliver value.

Q. Does this new organization mean technological innovations debuting on the IBM mainframe may find their way to Power Systems servers more quickly? A. I would say yes but I think it’s already been happening more quickly. I think it took us a while to get this started and it wasn’t necessarily the natural thing for people to do but I would say over the past three or four years it has become a lot more prevalent. By the way, there are Power technologies we take advantage of in other places as well. It’s about sharing and a greater ability to share. We’re trying to expand on what has already been working. The example I gave you around shared power packaging and cooling, shared chip sets, shared cabinetry, shared clustering, partitioning, v ir t ualizat ion—t hose t hing s are happening much more quickly. This is an acceleration on something I would say is already happening.
