Editor’s Desk Inside this month’s issue CONTRIBUTORS Tradition Takes Planning I could always count on seeing all of my cousins and eating turkey, stuffing and grandma’s fruit salad. M y family’s holiday tradition has always been gathering for a big dinner. Growing up, Caroline Vitse Shot Put Champ Copyeditor Caroline Vitse was the 1998 New York State Section II shot put champion in high school. She’s kept up her throwing muscles by toting around her toddler son Bradley. James Caffrey Loyal Yankee James Caffrey, co-author of this issue’s Technical Corner on page 40, classifies himself as a rabid New York Yankees fan and dabbler in sabermetrics. As a child, all of this happened seamlessly and the timing was always flawless. Now, as an adult who has hosted her own (albeit smaller) family dinner, I know how much effort goes on behind the scenes. I now understand and appreciate all of the hard work and preparation. In a similar way, IBM painstakingly plans not only its system design, but also the architecture of its operating systems. When IBM announced its new zEnterprise* 196, its development teams were working in tandem to release an updated version of z/OS* that would leverage all of the new opportunities available via the Unified Resource Manager and BladeCenter* Extension. This issue outlines some of the results of the behind-the-scenes work. An interview with Rational* Software’s General Manager Danny Sababah on page 32 reveals the benefits of leveraging the zEnterprise System with Rational. IBMers explain a new approach to network security on page 37 and predictive failure analysis capabilities introduced in z/OS 1.10 on page 40. Analyst Dr. Howard Rubin explains his research on the economics of mainframe computing on page 26. Hopefully this peek into the kitchen gives you a new appreciation for IBM’s tradition of hard work and innovation.
