This inaugurates a new chapter in our history. The fact that we’re embracing x86 and Power Systems* RISC-based technologies gives us a chance to move the dialogue from a “religious” discussion about platform selection to how we realize value to the business while leveraging all of these technologies under a common governance umbrella. There are several aspects that influence platform selection today. Application availability and the concept of fit for purpose—workloads typically belong on a given architectural topology—are examples of that. Many times these decisions are based on real business criteria and eventually yield the right results for the business. Many times they become too polarized and you have camps or silos within IT advocating for the technology they’re most familiar with, and that’s not in the best interest of the business. By embracing all of these technologies we’re more inclusive than exclusive of these different perspectives.

This is a new approach to computing for

System z. How do you think customers will respond?

Customers have already been responding well to the System z mainframe as a platform for hybrid computing, as attested by our growth with Linux* on System z and Java* adoption on the platform. What we’re doing takes this to its next level. This is also about realizing organizational advantage and how customers could realign what they have today and how they’re organized in these different silos to align IT and IT service delivery to business needs. Organizations can now cut across different technology silos and optimize IT across all of these application-

deployment options. They can also realize organizational benefits; you could redeploy people from dealing with infrastructure complexity to providing business value. Think about how mainframes run today: you need fewer personnel allocated to dealing with infrastructure issues and you can have a larger share of IT resources focused on application development and business alignment. That’s the thought. By minimizing complexity and allowing you to align your organization to business needs, it makes it easier for you to redeploy resources from dealing with IT complexity to collaborating for business innovation.

beyond what they do with it and embrace some of the applications that surround the mainframe and provide a single governance process. We’ll also see some clients who don’t have a System z heritage, but are dealing with the same complexities that mediumand large-sized enterprises are. They will see in this an opportunity to drive IT simplification. I would love to see customers do a total replacement of their IT infrastructure with zEnterprise Systems, but I believe it won’t happen this way. It will happen incrementally. It will start with applications that have a direct affinity for the System z server and grow from there.

How will customers be implementing

the zEnterprise System into their existing infrastructure?

We’ll likely see two types of customers: those who have a System z ser ver today who w i l l ex pand
