IBM’s next-generation server, the IBM zEnterprise 196 (z196) is the industry’s fastest and most scalable enterprise system. Its 5.2 GHz superscalar processor can scale up to 96 cores and up to 3 TB of memory. “This is the fastest and one of the most scalable system designs in the industry today,” says Paulo Carvao, IBM vice president, System z global sales. “If you translate this to direct impact on customer workloads, we’re talking about in excess of 30-percent improvement over traditional z/OS* workloads and in excess of 60-percent improvement in performance for Java* software-based workloads. All of this is in the same energy envelope of today’s System z10* server.” The efficiency is such that IBM can deliver a virtual server in this env ironment r unning Linux* on System z for less than $1,000 per virtual image, according to Freund. “What we have in the z196 is worthy of a major announcement all by itself with major enhancements to energy efficiency, performance, scalability and manageability.”

allows customers to extend the System z qualities of service horizontally to Linux* on System x* and AIX* on POWER7* applications. IBM supports blades and optimizers via the zBX. The optimizers include the IBM Smart Analytics Optimizer and a Data Power Optimizer. (The Smart Analytics Optimizer is available now, and IBM announced plans for a DataPower Optimizer to improve website and network performance.) Carvao says the optimizers build on IBM’s Smart Archive Strategy and will provide an accelerator for certain types of DB2* queries—those that benefit from parallel in-memory processing.

)<03+05.Ã;/,Ã)90+.,
Additionally, IBM announced the IBM Unified Resource Manager: an integrated System z management facility, designed to unify workload management on the zEnterprise System. It allows customers to integ rate System x and POWER7 technologybased workloads and manage them as if they were par t of a single System z machine, much the way specialt y eng ines are cur rent ly managed on today’s mainframes. The Unified Resource Manager allows customers to install updates, monitor, manage, opt imize and diagnose workloads that reside in hybrid components. “Think about it as the secret sauce that connects the next-generation System z server to

its hybrid capabilities that reside in the BladeCenter Extension,” Carvao says. However, clients can use the z196 simply as the next-generation mainframe. They don’t need to day one take advantage of the Unified Resource Manager’s hybrid capabilities, he adds. Freund says this approach is designed for customers who really understand how System z servers work: those who want to extend the capacities that they like on System z server to workloads that currently don’t run on IBM mainframes. “To get the benefits of this clients have to understand the benefits of z/OS technology because it’s what enables all of these capabilities,” he says. “We’re taking that functionality, putting it into the firmware, and allowing other environments, including AIX, Linux on System z and Linux on x86 to benefit from those technologies and management approaches.”

This announcement positions the IBM mainframe as the system of all systems, and clients will reap the benefits in three key areas; they’ll see operational, business and organizational advantages. Operational Today clients have multitiered environments, but they must integrate the technology themselves. Many tools, shell scripts and processes make up for the fact these are different technology silos with different manage-

IBM has also announced z/OS v1.12 and z/OS Management Facility v1.12, which is covered on page 46.
