Insider
spun off. To keep in step, data centers must morph to fulfill their roles as guardians of business records and resources of strategic intelligence. The savvy IT leader views change not as a threat, but as an opportunity. Change can be the catalyst that spurs an IT executive to look at datacenter operations from a clean-slate perspective. What’s cost effective? Can response time be improved? Can energy efficiency be increased? Can security holes be plugged? What do new business regulations mandate? In this debate, questions beget questions, not the least of which is how organizations should respond to the march of the media. In short, the answer is to simplify and go back to basics. I realize this is easier said than done, but it could very well become a necessity in the future and mean the difference between storage failure and continuity. It’s impossible to simplify technology without first simplifying the processes that created the complexity in the first place, so IT executives must evaluate all of the processes between points A (data source) and B (final repository). It’s here that the influence of regulatory compliance will be most prevalent, as they determine why a process is in place, when it was established and, ideally, how it can be streamlined to meet the same goals. It’s best to evaluate these processes against existing technology first, again working backward from result and solution to need, and then against available technologies.

It’s impossible to simplify technology without first simplifying the processes that created the complexity in the first place.
For instance, the cost of electrical power is rising steadily, as are the power demands of data-center equipment. The result is an upward cost spiral IT managers wish to control. A green IT strategy can be as simple as replacing equipment with smaller equivalents to reduce floor space, or migrating disk to solid-state drives (SSDs) to eliminate excess power and cooling requirements. Another example may be to replace tapes in favor of disk, which eliminates the need for pollution-emitting trucks as part of the data-transmission and recovery process. Such migration also offers the benefits of greater flexibility, faster recovery and e-discovery performance, and tighter control over data security. To take it even one step further, SSD storage eliminates power and cooling inefficiencies that disks inherently possess. This technology, however, isn’t yet at a price point that would make it viable in every situation. According to a recent AFCOM data-center trends survey, nearly 40 percent of respondents indicated they continue to operate mainframe computer systems in their data centers. Responses were mixed when asked whether or not they planned to replace tape-based systems within the next few years—a decision no doubt driven by the influence of the outside factors discussed above. dedupe engine prior to arriving at its final destination. Other data may be eligible for compression before final storage. Different data may have to be archived as-is for legal purposes. Regardless, these differences have resulted in massively complex environments, which, if left alone, have a tendency to snowball out of control. While the task of untangling and reorganizing storage processes and technologies is daunting, it’s possible. With careful planning and a thorough understanding of influencing factors (as well as the means to address them), inefficiencies can be identified and eliminated. Key ingredients for such a project include discipline, determination and f lexibility. The rewards are great. Evolution is inevitable, and with it comes expansion and growth. This evolution isn’t so much a challenge as an opportunity. The information age has given rise to a culture that revolves around data, with technology at its core. We’re quickly nearing a crossroads where, as a society, our mindset toward data management will need to undergo a radical shift toward simplicity and currency in data processes and technology.
