(iSchool) –including David and Susan Dischiave–have partnered with the System z Academic Initiative to develop new curriculum to teach students about mainframe technologies and how Fortune 1000 companies rely on the platform. As a result, students are getting job offers working with some of IBM’s most elite clients.

At a typical coal power plant, 50 percent of energy generated goes up the smoke stack as heat is lost. An additional 10 to 20 percent is lost in transmission and conversion. In comparison, at the Syracuse GDC very few losses occur since micro turbines generate the electrical power and the waste heat energy is captured and reused. By utilizing cleanburning natural gas, the center’s carbon footprint is also significantly reduced. “The Green Data Center is significantly more efficient than the 30-percent efficiency of a typical coal power plant,” Hanson says. Would-be-wasted micro turbine exhaust heat is captured and converted into chilled water via double-effect absorption chillers. Through a closedloop water-cooling system—created specifically for this data center—server rack, rear-door heat exchangers and

he new data center is a great opportunity for student leaning.

Syracuse University has been a strong ally and advocate of the IBM mainframe and its Academic Initiative, reports Doug Trimboli, IBM System z* technical sales and support. Over the past five years, professors from the Information Studies school

new prototype sidecar heat exchangers use this chilled water to remove heat from each rack more efficiently than conventional air-cooling methods. The data center is fully liquid-cooled, eliminating the need for central-room air conditioners. Sensors monitor server temperatures and usage to tailor the amount of cooling delivered—further improving efficiency. As another benefit to efficiency, only one third of the heat energy is needed to cool the computers

on the raised floor. The rest is piped to an adjacent building and used for heating and cooling, further reducing the data center’s carbon footprint. In a typical data center, alternating current (AC) electricity is delivered by a central power plant through the local utility’s power grid. The high-power line voltage is then stepped down and converted to DC to power the servers. This step down and conversion process results in additional inefficiencies. At SU,

server, retrofitted to accept DC power; IBM DS8300* storage; an IBM Power* 575 server; and a BladeCenter* server. It all fits in a 12,000 square-foot facility with a 6,000 square-foot data floor.

BÓThe Syracuse University IT

team had been piecing together a data center from commodity parts for years. Those systems required a lot of physical energy to run and person power to maintain,” says Bob E. Hanson, IBM Systems and Technology Group innovation leader. “What we’re doing is to start introducing advanced IT systems, ones that are not only energy efficient, but are also easier to manage and have greater capabilities.”

BÃIBM provided

more than $5 million in equipment, design services and support to the project, including power-generation equipment, the servers and storage devices. IBM will invest an additional $27 million to pay for the center in the next five years. —N.B.
