« Exploit unique System z server advantages, consequently reducing costs while providing world-class workload management and high availability InfoSphere Information Server can help an enterprise deliver clean and trusted data. Information can only support innovation and timely, effective decision making if the users have high confidence in its information. Confidence is based upon a common understanding of terms, data linage and, of course, data accuracy. InfoSphere Information Server ensures the data has been properly analyzed, cleansed and transformed—while proving an audit trail of metadata. Information Server on System z converts application data into business gold by leveraging the hundreds of prebuilt, metadata-driven transformation functions that combine, restructure and aggregate key data in new ways. Transforming and standardizing data so it can be used by multiple business systems, Information Server can automate and remove the complexity of integrating data from heterogeneous data sources. Ultimately, this ensures information is in a form appropriate for its intended use: providing critical business information at any time to any authorized user. Combining Information Server with the high availability of DB2 for z/OS provides a software platform for a dynamic, high-availability database. It brings a set of tooling to foster data governance and the capability to capture and transform data with the delivery capabilities for today’s modern applications. InfoSphere Information Services Director enables organizations to build simple Web services that can deliver a small fact or enough data to show a trend. Web services are completely reusable and can be the basic building block for a more robust SOA environment. They can encapsulate federation,

data integration or multiple other services. SOA can prov ide appl icat ions component ser v ices and enable these services to be joined together as composite applicat ions that can be rapidly constructed to meet the needs of changing business requirements. Using this approach, organizations can develop SOA information services to deliver the information to empower the people and support the dynamic processes that drive their organizations toward business optimization. InfoSphere Industry Data Models provide a glossary of terms and definitions that define the business and its processes, and a unified view of the business across all of its operational systems. Building a data warehouse without an enterprise model is like building a house without a set of building plans: The outcome can be very expensive and can result in a schedule of endless iterations and modifications trying to accommodate new functionality. As part of its Industry Data Models, each model also includes a set of Business Solution Templates (BSTs). These BSTs are multidimensional models for addressing key performance indicators within a business, such as customer profitability or capital management. The models also have a set of optional services that enable organizations to re-architect their business applications using Web services in SOA with business-process flows. InfoSphere Master Data Management Server provides a single interface to the master data within a consistent set of Web services. This enables the organization to more easily establish rules on how new records are created, updated or removed, plus myriad other activities. It provides a higher level of security and can ensure the data

enterprise wide. Recognizing data as a corporate, strategic asset means the data must become trusted, integrated and dynamic. Like other corporate assets, they must be inventoried, understood, managed and exploited for the benefit of the company. Cognos 8 BI for Linux on System z can deliver a comprehensive BI solution for the mainframe, as many companies are looking to consolidate their BI tool inventory. Cognos provides reporting, analysis and an easy-to-use dashboard. Reporting allows business users to easily access relevant information with confidence that the numbers they see are the same throughout the organization (http://bit.ly.cognosreporting).

Definition
Master Data n. any data contained in multiple lines of business applications. The most common types are relationship (e.g. customer, supplier) and product.

Analysis enables the guided exploration of information that pertains to all dimensions of the business, regardless of where the data is stored (http://bit. ly.cognosanalytics). Users can pivot data and analyze and report against online analytical processing (OLAP) and dimensionally aware relational sources. Business dashboards communicate complex information quickly. They translate information from various corporate systems and data into visually rich presentations using gauges, maps, charts, and other graphical elements to
