Stop Run An eclectic take on the mainframe world Learning With Laughter Scott Hayes’ best DB2 teaching tool is humor BY SHIRL E Y S. SAVAGE f humor is part of one’s DNA, then Scott Hayes certainly has those chromosomes. “Humor and storytelling are important to helping people understand what’s important,” says Hayes. “If you can tell a story about a situation that people can relate to and throw in some exaggerations, people are going to remember the story. There’s too much dry material out there.” Wit h t his idea in mind, Hayes, president and CEO of Database Brothers Inc. (DBI), decided to take a humorous approach to the focus of his company’s business—DB2*. In striving to grow the DB2 community, Hayes pondered the best way to reach his audience. “I was looking for an entertaining, lighthearted way to build more community around DB2 that wasn’t text heavy.” he says. Hayes realized the talk-show format would be perfect for the job. “The DB2Night Show” was born. Hayes hosts the show and invites guests from the DB2 world to join him. “Educate, inform and entertain are the three buzzwords around ‘The DB2Night Show,’ ” says Hayes. There’s a “studio audience” composed of viewers who sign up for one of the 1,000 free seats to the show. The one-hour-long show is broadcast live to the studio audience via the Internet and taped for on-demand viewing. The first episode aired Sept. 24 and featured IBM’s Drew Bradstock, program director, DB2 Product Management at IBM on the top 10 coolest things about DB2 9.7; Rebecca Bond, DB2 consultant, on the top 10 security tips; and Hayes on the top 10 ways to know your database is toast. The studio audience was composed of more than 100 people who gave the show high ratings and positive feedback. “We knew we had a hit with the format,” Hayes says. Subsequent episodes have featured DB2 9.7 and Oracle enablement; high availability and disaster recovery versus GRIDSCALE; DB2 9.8 for Linux*, UNIX* and Windows* pureScale (with Matt Huras, distinguished engineer, and Aamer Sachedina, senior technical staff member, from IBM Toronto Laboratory); and the SQL Snapshot Potluck. “Guests talk about what’s new with IBM as well as burning issues with DB2,” says Hayes. “We’re cracking some jokes and trying to entertain people as we spread the gospel of DB2.” Hayes’ goal is to produce two to four shows a month. “We aim to look at world events and trends to keep the shows timely,” he says. “The DB2Night Show” is free of advertising except for a two-minute ad for DBI, in compensation for all the work the company does. “The DB2Night Show” studio audience is growing as word gets out and replay downloads are accelerating. While the show’s live audience is primarily drawn from North America, there’s interest from Europe and Australia, too. Unsurprisingly, Hayes did want to be a stand-up comic at one time. “It was contemplated,” he says. “I learned many comics live in the trunks of their cars and it takes many years to become established. Much as I like to make people laugh, I thought I’d have a more fruitful career in IT.” Judging from the success he’s had from tapping into our need to laugh and learn, Hayes made a wise choice. www.db2nightshow.com is the place to go to find out about upcoming shows and download previous episodes.
