can achieve the level of utilization and reliability of the System z platform, and z/OS is the cornerstone technology to accomplish this. It’s unrivaled for manag ing mu lt iple workloads for missioncritical computing, while optimizing the execution of these workloads across the system. In addition, “No other platform can achieve the level of utilization and reliability of the System z platform.” —Tom Rosamilia system definition to be more consistent with the elements of end-to-end applications. This will encourage our clients to take a holistic view of their data centers. The work really starts today in discussions about new workloads where the IBM mainframe is the best fit. This is the first necessary step down the road to achieve the competitive infrastructure. of an approximate $200 million expected from the server-consolidation effort. For our clients, we’ve created similar of fer i ng s v ia compet it ively pr iced solutions. The new Solution Edition for Cloud Computing consists of a packaged price offering for our clients, getting them quicker value with a great price and simple implementation. And they can achieve great efficiencies around using clouds on System z solutions. The Smart Analytics Cloud is just taking the cloud capabilities and applying them to a very specific implementation around analytics. This is something I think can really be helpful to companies that have many disparate and distributed analytic solutions. They can centralize these, come up with common queries and really develop much better system utilization so they can more efficiently utilize their resources and access their information. the platform can consolidate and host Linux workloads extending the platform strengths and qualities of service, and simultaneously improving performance through technologies such as hypersockets. Hypersockets optimize the performance and security of mixed z/OS and Linux environments–all in a single system. The future of the System z platform extends this idea even further, where clients can manage workloads end-to-end across multiple IT architectures and platforms. Being tightly coupled and managed from a System z construct brings qualities of service to a heterogeneous i n f r a st r uc t u r e, i mpr ov i ng s e r v ic e deployment and reducing cost and risk. I’m ver y excited about this direction as it’s steeped in helping our clients solve their most pressing issues and moving them towards a more dynamic infrastructure. computing. What role does the IBM mainframe play in cloud computing? Q: A: The theme of this issue is cloud That’s an exciting question. Especially when you consider the IBM mainframe has delivered on the promises of cloud–such as scalability, security, virtualization and the capability to run multiple workloads–long before cloud computing even existed. Today, we’re using System z servers to deliver cloud computing to IBM employees and our clients. Most cases involve private clouds, or clouds that are inside clients’ firewalls. The advanced virtualization that z/VM provides and the combination of Linux and z/OS running on the platform (along with other operating systems) really makes it a terrific cloud environment. For more than 398,000 IBM employees, our CIO’s office is realizing significant server consolidation benefits and cost savings from our internal transformation project via System z solutions. The CIO has also tapped a System z mainframe to provide another extension of the transformation project to help 200,000 IBMers gain stronger business intelligence via a cloud model. System z solutions will power what is believed as the world’s largest business-analytics cloud effort for the internal IBM account with expected savings of more than $20 million, on top Q: A: What will continue to make the IBM mainframe relevant in 2020? The IBM mainframe will remain relevant in 2020 as we continue to stay true to our core heritage. This is a heritage that starts with a drive to understand the needs of our clients. The IBM mainframe platform has never been a technology-fortechnology’s-sake platform. It has been a platform that invents technology to address challenges our clients face. This is the true spirit of innovation, and it has driven the IBM mainframe for the past 45 years. I am confident it can continue to propel us forward for the next 45 years. to think outside of their standard IBM mainframe implementations? Q: A: How is IBM going to encourage clients As we move forward into the era of workload-optimized, heterogeneous computing, we must change how we view the system. No longer will a system be defined as a siloed computing platform that loosely interoperates with other siloed platforms. Rather, we must revise our Natalie Boike is managing editor of IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe edition.
