IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe Edition - January/February 2010 - 32

At the end of the day, it’s very rewarding to see how the IBM mainframe continues to bring strong economic returns for our install base and how clients in emerging markets seek out the System z server. Q: A: Looking toward the future, what do you see for the growth of the platform? The IBM mainframe has played an important role in the data center, and looking forward this role will be increasing in importance. The CIO agenda today demands a shift toward investment in new projects by reducing operational expenses. Many clients are gett ing this done through consolidation onto System z solutions, dramatically simplifying their infrastructure while making it more dynamic. We see new paradigms—such as cloud computing—emerging as the answer to everyone’s problems. Underneath it all, you need the right infrastructure. The IBM mainframe is well suited to meet these needs, and when combined with the capability of System z server to run a multitude of workloads, I see great potential. I’m also excited that since 2004, more than 50,000 students from more than 600 universities graduated with education on System z solutions. These future leaders will begin supporting the IBM mainframe with fresh ideas relevant to current trends. The growth of the platform will stay strong because of our next generation of IBM mainframe administrators and programmers. and they’ll take longer to approve what they do spend. This has had some impact on our business, as you have seen this year. However, underneath it all, I think we’re witnessing a fundamental shift in the way technology is viewed, and this is something I think is going to help us greatly going forward. There’s going to be an increased focus on efficient technology deployment; fields filled with low-utilized servers are no longer going to be a sustainable model. Saving data-center space and power are two important aspects that come to mind. Companies that figure out how to manage their IT resources most efficiently–and do so in a way that actually helps improve their levels of service and responsiveness–are going to be the ones Obviously expenses are a top concern who win in the future. The requirements that must be satisfied to get there are core capabilities of the IBM mainframe. We’ve been working closely with our clients to help them understand how System z solutions can get them where they want to go and have also been using these experiences to tune In the short term, the recession has our development plans for the future. “The state-of-the-art System z10 mainframe stands alone in comparison to alternatives.” A: Today, and in the future, I envision —Tom Rosamilia, System z general manager component of their solution to meet clients will continue leveraging System z ser vers as a critical the realities of the IT challenges I mentioned. In essence, System z servers are a key piece of what IBM is calling a dynamic infrastructure. Increasingly, we see System z products being used not only for what we might call traditional IBM mainframe workloads, but also for new workloads such as those involving SAP, business intelligence and Linux. Why? It’s because clients find deploying workloads on the System z platform is proving to be the most cost effective. Not only is it the most reliable and available, it’s the most cost effective. This is driving a very profound change in the way clients are viewing their data centers. This is something the IBM mainframe is very good at: the capability to host workloads in a fashion that’s together yet separate. Q: as the economy rebounds. How has the recession impacted IBM mainframe customer needs? Will that customer profile be different in a recovery than it has been during the economic slump? mentioned a workload- optimized approach as being key for the future of computing. What role does the IBM mainframe play in that environment? Q: During the System z Expo keynote, you A: had what you may call an expected set of consequences: capital is tighter, companies are more cautious about what they spend the System z platform beyond 2010? Q: How do you envision customers using perfected the art of running workloads together, but separate. No other platform A: The IBM mainframe has very much JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2010 ibmsystemsmag.com/mainframe
