Insider Table 1 METHOD Data-Transfer Methods BENEFIT CONSIDERATIONS On-network physical link System z mainframe enterprise data-protection solution Backup data travels across the physical communication network, contributing to network congestion and high System z TCP/IP CPU resource consumption. Network capacity limits the aggregate backup rate. A HyperSockets solution is limited to data already residing on Linux on System z accessible storage. The Linux server and z/OS image must reside within the same System z machine. HyperSockets data transfer still consumes System z TCP/IP CPU resources. Off-network virtual link A LAN-free virtual link (HyperSockets solution) provides similar benefits as the on-network physical link, but the physical network capacity no longer limits the aggregate backup rate. Data is directly shipped to a z/OS backup server over virtual System z HyperSockets in large chunks to reduce overall network traffic. In addition to other method benefits, backup data transfer with this solution doesn’t consume TCI/IP CPU resources; data is directly shipped to z/OS backup server over Fibre and FICON* channels. The backup data rate is FICON channel speed. Storage controller channel capacity is the only aggregate backup rate limitation. Off-network storage controller cross-platform access Storage controllers with a cross-platform access feature are available from a limited number of vendors. In the future, more vendors will offer this feature thus reducing potential hardware vendor lock in. TCP/IP communication link; LAN-free across a virtual TCP/IP network gateway; and LAN-free storage controller-based data transfer. For a complete comparison of benefits and considerations for each transport model, see Table 1 (above). reported their average deduplication ratio was in the 20-to-1 range. That’s the amount of backup data stored in their deduplication appliance and is only about 5 percent of what they had previously been writing to tape. There’s a lway s a d i sc la i mer that results may vary depending on environment and parameters. However, one representative of a major hardware deduplication appliance vendor, after testing their deduplicaiton technology in conjunction with that same ISV’s z/OS mainframe solutions said, “The results were perfect. Data that already exists (from previous backups) isn’t rewritten.” To reduce the amount of replicated data and protect Linux on System z and enterprise storage in general, you can implement a z/OS mainframe dataprotection solution that seamlessly takes advantage of hardware data deduplication. To visualize how you can optimize your data storage with deduplicaiton, see Figure 2 (page 23). The Ultimate Goal The best solutions for protecting Linux on System z and enterprise data have the common objectives of maintaining data availability, ensuring its quick recovery as well as reducing its storage requirements–thus meeting the IT team’s ultimate data-center goals. Your best bet is a z/OS mainframe data-protection solution that will leverage local hardwarereplicat ion technolog y; centralize scheduling, tracking and auditing; provide cross-platform off-network, high-speed full-volume and file-level data transfer to and from z/OS mainframe tape and disk; and seamlessly take advantage of data deduplication. Storage Efficiency Today IT teams face many challenges. As I already mentioned, one of the most critical is the explosive data growth. The number and capacity of the disk volumes holding this data continues to increase. Deduplication is an exciting new technology that can reduce the amount of data a business must replicate to protect their active data. Customer experience is now verifying deduplication laborator y results of significant reductions for open systems and mainframe data. One customer with z/OS mainframe data-protection solutions from a wellknown ISV protecting about 5 TB of z/OS data and 4 TB of enterprise data, associated with 41 open-system servers, Tom Meehan is vice president of INNOVATION Data Processing. One of his responsibilities is managing relationships with other hardware and software technology vendors. JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2010 ibmsystemsmag.com/mainframe
