Administrator Getting the most from your systems Configuring AEM to Monitor Power Usage BY JANET WEBER I BM Systems Director Active Energy Manager* (AEM) is a Systems Director plug-in that offers ma ny powe r a nd t he r ma l mon itor i ng a nd management capabilities. You can use it to gain an understanding of your data center’s power usage, which may help you better utilize available power. You can also use it to plan for future energy needs. A EM can directly monitor IBM Power Systems*, System z*, System x* and BladeCenter* servers. It can also indirectly monitor non-IBM equipment using external metering devices such as power distribution units (PDUs) and sensor devices. This article explains how to use external metering devices with AEM to monitor equipment in your data center. It describes how to configure associations between the metering devices and the resources they meter and describes the monitoring capabilities available for externally metered resources. click the metering device in the list; then choose Energ y >Conf igure Meter ing Dev ice. T h is w i ll launch the Configure Metering Device interface (see Figure 1, page 34). If “Configure Metering Device” isn’t shown as an option in the Energy sub-menu, monitor ing is only suppor ted at the meter ingdevice level for the selected device, and resource associations aren’t supported. At the top of the Conf igure Metering Device page, you’ll see an image of the metering device if one is available. The bottom portion of the page contains a table showing the current metering-device configuration. This table shows all of the sensors the metering device contains and their types. AEM supports the following sensor types: s 0OWER CONSUMPTION s 0OWER PRODUCTION s #URRENT s 6OLTAGE s 4EMPERATURE s (UMIDITY s $EW POINT If the metering device is a PDU or a UPS, then the table also shows any outlet groups the metering device contains. An outlet group represents the most granular level at which power can be metered. For some PDU models, the relationship between outlet groups and outlets is one-to-one. For other models, power data can’t be metered for individual outlets; rather, it can only be obtained for a group of outlets. You can determine the metering granularit y by looking at the Type column. To define an association between the metering device and a resource it meters, you must edit one of the sensors or outlet groups in the list. To do this, select the desired sensor or outlet group and then use the Edit button at the top of the table or the Edit Configuration To begin, perform a system discovery of the metering device and request access to it. AEM supports the following external metering device types: IBM and non-IBM PDUs; sensor devices with power and/or environmental sensors; and uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs). The complete list of supported metering devices is listed in the Active Energy Manager Information Center online (http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/ director/v6r1x/topic/aem_410/frb0_r_HW_reqs_ metering_devices.html). Use the Configure Metering Device interface to create associations between the metering devices and the resources they meter. Configuring the Metering Device To access the Configure Metering Device interface, choose Navigate Resources from the left-hand navigation pane and select the Active Energy Manager Resources group from the table.
