Figure 1 Response Time Performance Gains Easy to Deploy While this level of performance might suggest a complex solution, Smart Analytics Optimizer is designed to be easy to deploy and scale for growth, through a turnkey solution. The solution plugs into your DB2* environment and complements traditional query processing, as shown in Figure 3 (page 25). Users continue to submit requests through existing applications. This may result in many queries, and DB2 for z/OS* leverages its cost-based optimizer to select the most efficient way to process incoming requests. Today, specialty engines such as System z9* Integrated Information Processors are utilized for cost-efficiency and parallel-query processing for quick response time. The IBM Smart Analytics Optimizer adds another option for incoming queries. Don’t change your applications or tune for queries manually; enable accelerated processing for critical BI queries. Compared to other solutions, integration with the databasemanagement system goes beyond a simple communication link. Management and administration is controlled through DB2 for z/OS and applying service through SMP/E follows established procedures. IBM Smart Analytics Optimizer is virtually just an off-the-board part of DB2 for z/OS. Proven characteristics associated with DB2 for z/OS, such as secur it y, reliabilit y and continuous availabilit y aren’t compromised. While transparent to applications, accessing data in DB2 for z/OS, IBM Smart Analytics Optimizer fits perfectly into the broader data warehouse and BI solution stack on the System z platform. IBM Smart Analytics Optimizer plugs into the existing software and hardware stack and adds hardware-assisted support for cost-efficient BI query optimization. With all software components available on System z servers, this solution inherits the IBM mainframe’s a coordinator node processes an SQL query or selected query block and then forwards them to many worker nodes that quickly scan the local in-memory data. Changing Data Storage Traditional analy tic-processing approaches use a star or snowf lake schema, where large fact tables are joined to smaller dimension tables. The way BI systems handle t hese schema s d i rec t ly i mpac t s over a l l s ystem per for ma nce a nd t he end-u se r e x pe r ience. For IBM Smar t Analy tics Optimizer, all relevant data is stored in main memory rather than on disks. Processing algor ithms are t uned to ensure critical processing is done based on data kept in the CPU’s level 2 cache. In addition to changing data placement, IBM Smart Analytics Optimizers breaks new ground in storing BI data in the best suitable format. First, a hybrid approach of column and row storage optimizes access for predicate access and aggregation in queries. This is different from a pure row-based approach of traditional, relational, database-management systems–as it requires significantly less data to be scanned for query processing. Secondly, data is compressed with a set of new, unique compression algorithms, allowing the highest compression ratio on typical BI data. Due to the compressed raw-data layout, many predicates can be quickly evaluated without uncompressing the data. This eliminates creating data aggregates that are often used to ensure consistent, repeatable performance, thereby saving valuable time. This offering also changes the paradigm for deploying analytic systems, by integrating analytic work within the overall business infrastructure. This environment integration simplifies the data flow into the analytic system, thus erasing the lines between discrete systems dedicated to separate workloads and resulting in a more cohesive, integrated infrastructure to drive business growth and value. 24 NOV EMBER/DEC EMBER 20 09 Figure 2 Parallel Query Processing ibmsystemsmag.com/mainframe
