“DFSMS provided device support for high-performance FICON in its initial release with single-track exploitation, and now we’ve improved it with support for multitrack.” — Barbara McDonald, DFSMS product manager tecture, design and development. “We’re now allowing the DVE function to move from a manual process where the user had to run a job to have the system itself detect and react to the expansion allowing the new space to be immediately available.” Reliability, Availability and Serviceability In z/OS V1.8, DFSMShsm prov ided suppor t to recover individual data sets from copy pool backup versions. To recover deleted or moved data sets, customers reallocated and cataloged them to the same volumes they resided on at the time of the backup. With enhancements to DFSMShsm this restriction is removed. “Exploitation of the volume-level fast replication by DFSMShsm provides customers with the capability to back up hundreds of volumes in a matter minutes,” says McDonald. “The new enhancements in z/OS V1.11 are designed to improve the usability of the recovery function.” Data Archiving With continued data growth and an increased focus on data security and regulatory compliance, archiving and archive management is a customer pain point. To help customers add ress t h is issue, DFSMS prov ides retent ion-related enhancements in z/OS V1.11. Object access method (OAM) added retention policies, which are intended to enhance protection against inadvertent object deletion–such as deletion protection, deletion hold, event-based protection and retention protection. In addition, DFSMShsm now has enhanced dataset backup to enable retention period specification to a backup copy. The retention value can be used to keep a backup copy for a shorter or longer than normal period of time. According to Carranza Lewis, two enhancements from DFSMS start to address customer issues associated with data archiving and retention from a System z perspective. “We’re focused on archiving and archive management because we recognize this is a problem area for our customers, especia lly w it h t he increased demands for regu lator y compliance,” says McDonald. Security Continuing its dedication to keeping customer information secure, z/OS V1.11, along with IBM Tivoli* Key Lifecycle Manager (TKLM) functions, support the full disk-encryption drive sets of the System Storage DS8000, which provide the capability to encrypt data at rest. Now data is encrypted as it enters the drive and decrypted as it leaves the drive. “Because the DS8000 has drive-level disk encr yption, it’s built into the infrastructure and essentially results in no performance impact. The solution is simple to install, configure, and requires no application or server changes.” says McDonald. Ready With DFSMS Scalability DFSMS offers an enhanced extended address volume (EAV) feature, which helps customers fur ther exploit EAVs as well as better control data-set migration to the extended addressing space (EAS) of an EAV. “We continue to enhance the EAV offering by now also allowing extended-format sequential data sets to exploit the additional capacit y available with EAVs,” says Carranza Lewis. “In addition, we allow for better migration to the EAS with the introduction of a new data set-level attribute EATTR, which can be used to specify whether a data set can have extended attributes, Format 8 and 9 DSCBs, and optionally reside in the EAS of an EAV. This attribute is supported for both VSAM and nonVSAM data sets.” With the latest DFSMS functions and enhancements included with z/OS V1.11, users will be better positioned to address the challenges they face as their data and storage needs grow. See the links section (page 20) for more information DFSMS. DFSMS is an element of z/OS, so it must be ordered as part of z/OS. ShopzSeries provides a way to plan and order your z/OS ServerPac or CBPDO and is available in the United States, Canada and several European countries.
