IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe Edition - November/December 2009 - 16

IT Today One company has had more than 90,000 employees view their pay stubs online within a two-hour time span. The workloadmanagement capabilities the System z mainframe and use of zIIP engines help make this happen. By implementing a PeopleSoft Solution Edition, not only are customers saving on the hardware and software required to implement PeopleSoft applications, but they’re also taking advantage of System z consolidation, high-availability and disaster-recovery capabilities. In contrast to PeopleSoft customers using distributed solutions where they normally have five to 10 database instances spread across multiple servers, these are generally consolidated onto one System z footprint. Wong adds, “Several customers have leveraged their existing Parallel Sysplex* configurations and the data-sharing capabilities of DB2 for their environments to provide highest level of availability,” he says. “They’ve also been able to leverage existing disaster-recovery practices and procedures, which many times are never tested in distributed environments.” “Our point is straightforward: We’re going to be competitive with alternative platforms for these workloads. Let’s take the cost discussion off of the table, and let’s instead talk about how to achieve your IT and business goals.” —Scott Carlson, program director, System z Product and Solutions Marketing Solution Edition for Enterprise Linux The Solution Edition for Enterprise Linux is different from other offerings because it’s more focused on the underlying infrastructure and less focused on an application-specific offering, System z Virtualization Initiative Leader Reed Mullen explains. The Enterprise Linux Solution Edition brings together Integrated Facility for Linux specialty processors, memory, I/O connectivity, z/VM* virtualization software and a three-year hardware-maintenance contract. This infrastructure focus allows customers to customize their IT shop based on the applications they want to implement, Carlson adds. “If users wanted to run Domino* on System z and Linux, they could buy Solution Edition for Enterprise Linux and snap on Domino, or they could add on SAP, Cognos* and many other applications in the same manner,” he says. “The Solution Edition for Enterprise Linux can be thought of as the foundation for other application building blocks.” As an example, Mullen says many Linux on System z clients have seen success hosting Oracle database workloads on the mainframe, enjoying considerable cost savings and greater flexibility. “A Linux on z/VM environment is able to exploit the classic strengths of System z architecture to provide extraordinary qualities of service, excellent scalability and high throughput,” Mullen explains. “There are more than 3,000 Linux applications available on the mainframe. System z offers attractive cost savings as an alternative to running those applications on distributed systems.” Mullen says running Linux on a dense virtual server like the mainframe helps save on software, energy, facilities and networking costs. Clients with a virtual machine or server-sprawl problem should find the Solution Edition for Enterprise Linux offers an attractive cost profile for hosting distributed platforms. Additionally, clients can use the Enterprise Linux Solution Edition for more than one workload. Mullen says a client beginning with a database workload can add a completely different workload on the same box and still achieve service-level agreements (SLAs) for the database part, while hosting an application that may have a critical response-time SLA. “This idea of mixing workloads as you consolidate on a single copy of z/VM further advantages the client trying to control costs and manage complexity,” he adds. Scale Solution for Purpose Customers interested in implementing the Solution Edition for Enterprise Linux have two options. The LPAR option utilizes a client’s existing System z10* server and adds Enterprise Linux hardware and software components. As clients grow the scale of their implementation by adding more hardware and software assets, Solution Edition delivers better price performance. The second implementation option is to purchase a new System z10 machine. This option is also known as the “Enterprise Linux Server,” a name that focuses on the enterprise-class virtualization capabilities the system offers for hosting Linux workloads. “It’s the best virtual-server platform from IBM, and it happens to be Linux on z/VM on a System z10 machine,” Mullen adds. “The System z can consolidate many virtual servers in a single footprint, and there’s a lot of infrastructure support in the z/VM software that helps manage that large number of servers. If I want extreme virtualization, then I want the Enterprise Linux Server.” Get Your Solution Today For complete details on the System z Solution Editions for PeopleSoft and Enterprise Linux, visit www.ibm.com/ systems/z/solutions/editions/.
