Trends by-range universal table spaces now support the MEMBER CLUSTER option. In addition, the default classic partitioned table space from previous versions is replaced by the partitionby-range universal table space. s -ORE &LASH#OPY TECHNOLOGIES ENABLE FASTER MORE EFFICIENT backup and recovery. ISV Applications Expand O Cost Reduction DB2 X delivers cost savings in several areas, including simpler migration, easier administration, SQL compatibility, queryperformance management, compression and sysplex-wide workload management. DB2 X improvements help make migration simpler and smoother. The DB2 catalog is restructured to reduce lock contention and support better concurrency. This means you can upgrade applications or perform more administrative tasks in a shorter amount of time. Rebinds are recommended in the new release for two reasons: to consider improved access-path choices based upon optimizer enhancements; and to reestablish the runtime structures for the new release (e.g., S-PROCs). ver the last few releases, IBM has made it easier for applications to run on DB2* for z/OS*. DB2 X is no exception. With additional XML enhancements, implicit casting, SQL procedure language support for user-defined functions, and timestamp with timezone, applications have more functionality and are portable to the System z* platform. This has resulted in hundreds of ISV applications being ported to support DB2 for z/OS, including applications from ACI, Chordiant, and Temenos. The IBM Global Solutions Directory (www-304. ibm.com/jct09002c/gsdod/search.do) now contains more than 170 key partner applications, products, utilities and tools that work with DB2 for z/OS, with more on the way. Improving Core Competencies Key enhancements allow you to lock in access paths for specific queries, giving you more stability as you adopt new releases and leverage new capabilities. See “ISV Applications Expand” (right) for more information on enhancments. FjZgneZg[dgbVcXZbVcV\ZbZci/Enhancements provide greater control over access-path management. The DB2 9 benefits of plan stability for REBIND are also being extended to BIND in DB2 X, allowing fallback to a prior access path after application changes. Most importantly, you’ll be able to select important Dynamic SQL statements to stabilize, meaning they act like static SQL. You choose when to REBIND, and also whether to use plan stability for these stabilized Dynamic SQLs. And EXPLAIN has been enhanced to allow the current access path to be externalized, even if a BIND/REBIND was performed with EXPLAIN NO. 8dbegZhh^dc/DB2 and the System z hardware compression remains the most efficient compression technology on the market. Customers using System z compression in production environments report typical DASD savings of 60 percent on average, with many customers reporting 80 to 90 percent savings. Typical CPU time savings with IBM System z hardware compression over other software compression technologies can be up to 50 percent when dealing with simple queries scanning large data amounts. IBM tools have recently delivered the capability to compress and encrypt data, continuing to bring value to customers. DB2 X adds the capability to compress in-line LOBs, just like other data types. Hn heaZ m"l ^YZ ldg` adVY bV cV\ZbZci L A B / T he DB2 X WLM capabilities work across the entire sysplex, providing the only solution in the industry that can efficiently prioritize all system resources, not just database resources. This allows you to support all of the key components in a business process (based on business priorities) with a simpler solution that is more cost EFFECTIVE THA NSILOED SYSTEM S &OR MORE INFORMATION ON 7,- SEE “Managing BI With IBM Workload Manager,” on page 36. Continuing the Evolution The deep integration and synergy between DB2 for z/OS, System z hardware and z/OS supports diverse applications, architectures and technologies, with industry-leading availability, reliability and scalability. DB2 X software’s strong performance, scalability and availability improvements continue to outpace the industry and deliver outstanding results. DB2 X helps minimize complexity and maximize productivity to help customers respond to the strong cost pressures their businesses face. Terrie Jacopi is the DB2 for z/OS senior program manager for IBM Software Group. She can be reached at jacopi@us.ibm.com. Jeff Josten is an IBM distinguished engineer and lead architect for DB2 for z/OS. He can be reached at josten@us.ibm.com. DB2 X Beta The DB2* X for z/OS* beta program will be coming soon. Contact Terrie Jacopi or your IBM sales representative to learn how to check out the benefits of DB2 X for yourself. NOV EMBER/DEC EMBER 20 09 ibmsystemsmag.com/mainframe
