IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe digital edition - September/October 2009 - (Page 56) Stop Run An eclectic take on the mainframe world Captain Hawaii Gordon Bruce talks his way into a high-profile IT gig BY JIM UTSLER veryone knows the old saying: “Put your money where you mouth is.” That’s essentially what the mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, Mufi Hannemann, told Gordon Bruce when he hired Bruce to oversee the City and County’s IT department. The two had never met. Bruce was simply a voice on the radio, co-host of Hawaii Public Radio show “ThinkTech Hawaii.” Bet ween 2002 and 2004 Bruce and three others interviewed local and international tech insiders, talking about, according to Bruce, “what technology could do from an economic-development standpoint.” But Br uce, ha r d ly a sh r i n k i ng violet, also took jabs at the City and County of Honolulu, which is largely responsible for much of Hawaii’s statewide technology initiatives. “I could never understand why I would have to stand in line at a satellite city hall to register a vehicle in the state or, for that matter, stand in a different line to get a state driver’s license at a city facility,” he remarks. “I should have been able to do that online, and why, anyway, was the city issuing state documents?” Bruce and Hannemann, who had just won office, shared the notion behind the mayor’s oft-repeated mantra of “More online and less in line.” After a preliminary meeting between the two men, during which Bruce was hoping to land a consulting gig for the City and County, the mayor called him directly and offered him the position of director/CIO. No, that honor lies Gordon Bruce with his collection of grown-boy toys, including a vintage white 1962 Chevy Corvette, a Peter Fonda-autographed replica of the Captain America bike made famous in the counterculture cult-classic movie “Easy Rider,” and a 1993 Harley Davidson Heritage Softail, carefully reconditioned to mimic a 1969 Harley. Regarding the latter, Bruce, who has been riding motorcycles since he was a 15-year-old living in Toronto, says, “I lowered it, chromed it, redid the front lighting. It was a nice weekend distraction.
