Create these powerful new services using IBM tools like Lotus* Mashups, WebSphere sMash and Rational* Developer for System z* (RDz), as well as those from other vendors. They can greatly simplif y access to diverse information sources to quickly build new Web 2.0 applications. SOA has always been a crucial approach to achieving IT flexibility and effectiveness. CICS version 4.1 has continued to enhance its now mature SOA support with data mapping and Web ser vices addressing. The improvements to data mapping provide a faster and enhanced conversion between XML and language str uctures for all Web ser vices and include new APIs to access these services. The Web ser vices addressing specifications enable the normalization of information that a transport or message system usually provides and allows the inclusion of messagerouting data within SOAP headers. This eliminates reliance on network-level transport to carry routing information. The framework is transport-neutral and improves Web services interoperability using different transport mechanisms. The CICS support for Web services addressing is fully in line with the Worldwide Web Consortium specification. Service component architecture (SCA) is a better way of building an SOA—the logical next step. SCA completely separates the application from the underlying infrastructure. CICS TS V4.1 includes SCA support and this will help you identify and package your applications in a more flexible way. SCA specifically simplifies the process of rapidly assembling and deploying new business applications. CICS TS V4.1 helps you compete. You can quickly adapt your applications and processes to stay ahead of changing markets. You can also take advantage of new information channels for even greater coverage of the arena in which you compete. The Evolution of CICS C 1969 1975 ICS* first became a program product in 1969. In 1974 development was transferred to Hursley, located in Winchester, United Kingdom, where it has remained ever since. IBM Development Hursley is most characterized by a stately house that’s been in place for around 290 years. CICS may only be 40 years old, but in terms of the way IT evolves its equivalent maturity is probably akin to that of the Hursley House. CICS is used at Montreal Olympics and the most recent release, V1.2, includes SNA improvements. CICS OS/VS Version 1.6 allows for online definition of CICS resources. CICS Multiple Virtual Storage (MVS)/ Enterprise Systems Architecture (ESA) version 3.1 introduces 8,000 times more virtual storage and dynamic workload balancing. With the release of CICS MVS/ESA 4.1, IBM includes a new external call interface to enable CICS programs to be called from platforms other than mainframe. CICS rebrands to Transaction Server (TS) and CICS TS 1.2 allows users to “take CICS to the Web in 15 minutes.” CICS begins its journey on the Java* roadmap with CICS TS 2.1 Java support. The simple object access protocol for CICS capability is integrated into CICS TS. 3.1 with its Web services support.
