IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe digital edition - September/October 2009 - (Page 12) Focus on Storage “What we’re really seeing is an increasing amount of attention on the vulnerability presented by lost or stolen tapes, disk drives and portable storage media.” —Allen Marin, senior marketing manager, IBM enterprise disk systems CDs and DVDs—all of which can be plugged into a desktop system and potentially store company information that may be sensitive. Additionally, and more ominous for businesses, enterprise data-storage tapes, disks and other data-center storage devices have also become smaller, more mobile and easier to misplace or steal. One lost or stolen disk drive can mean the loss of a staggering amount of sensitive company data. “What we’re really seeing is an increasing amount of attention on the vulnerability presented by lost or stolen tapes, disk drives and portable storage media, such as flash drives, CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs,” says Allen Marin, senior marketing manager for IBM enterprise disk systems. “In fact, there’s a growing number of U.S. states and foreign governments enacting new laws to protect the personal data being stored by both private and public enterprises.” According to Marin, the emerging laws and rules dictate if a company loses a tape or disk media that contains an individual’s personal information–such as customer or employee information–the company must notify everyone thought to have had personal information on that media. Since today’s tape cartridges and disk-drive capacities can exceed 1 TB, a single tape can store thousands of names and SocialSecurity numbers. “With these new data-breach disclosure laws, a loss of a single tape can become a pretty expensive and embarrassing mistake,” says Marin. “However, if the device is encrypted, and you can prove it was encrypted, that usually excuses you of the breach notification and disclosure requirement; it’s what is referred to as a safe harbor.” Full Disk Encryption and Self-Encrypting Drives D ue to t he g r ow i ng t h r eat of ide nt it y t hef t a nd t he subsequent severity of recent disclosure laws and regulations, enterprises are becoming more concerned about the potential damage they can incur when losing even a single datastorage device. Eager to take advantage of the relatively new notification safe harbor of data encryption, enterprises are looking to the IT marketplace for the best encryption solution for their particular data-center requirements. IBM, Seagate Technology and LSI Corp. introduced the emerging technology behind full disk encryption (FDE). FDE is conducted within the data media itself, as opposed to other encryption methods that rely on an application or host server to encrypt data before it’s stored to a disk. By encrypting data at the storage medium, FDE reduces IT complexit y and decreases host server computing demands, improving performance. IBM examined the advantages of its FDE solutions and, together with Seagate, introduced this self-encr y pting FDE technolog y to t he high-end I BM System Storage* DS8000* storage system. IBM has successfully developed and promoted self-encrypting tape drives for almost three years and was eager to port the self-encrypting FDE model over to its enterprise disk systems. One of the principal advantages of DS8000 with FDE drives is they encr ypt data at the storage end point, providing the capability to store data in an encrypted form with very little operational complexity. IBM’s FDE solution supports demanding enter pr ise env ironments with v ir t ually no performance impact. By leveraging the self-encrypting functionality of DS8000 with FDE storage systems, businesses may limit the need for host-based encryption as well as minimize IT complexity by reducing or eliminating the need for other specialized encryption devices. Self-encrypting FDE technology allows storage systems (tape and disk) to perform data compression and/or de-duplication, which have received considerable attention as companies search for new ways to reduce the amount of data they store. Conversely, performing encryption at the host or application level prevents this since encrypted data can’t be compressed or de-duplicated. “The DS8000 was the first enterprise disk system to include the self-encrypting drive technology,” says Marin. “Since then, we’ve announced it will also be available on the midrange IBM System Storage DS5000 system, which reinforces our view that self-encrypting technology will eventually be a standard feature on all storage drives, including Fibre Channel, SATA [Serial ATA], flash drives, laptops and other mobile storage devices.” It may be easy for companies to become complacent about encr ypting their most seemingly secure data. As Marin points out, often when companies look at their enormous enterprise disk platforms, locked in a data center that’s only accessible to those individuals with access credentials and badges, it’s difficult to recognize any real vulnerability. 12 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2009 ibmsystemsmag.com/mainframe http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/mainframe Table of Contents for the Digital Edition of IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe digital edition -
