IBM Systems Magazine, Mainframe digital edition - July/August 2009 - 8

Editor’s Desk Inside this month’s issue Cooking Up a Data Solution I recently sorted through my recipes, as I’m planning a summer grill out for friends and family. I pretend I’m a culinary genius, but really I just follow someone else’s instructions and hope what I’m cooking tastes OK. My “cookbook” consists of a heap of cooking magazines and a stack of printouts from my favorite Web sites. Although I’m only planning to serve burgers, a few side dishes and a dessert, it took hours to sift though my mound of papers to find the types of recipes I wanted. Then, I had to go through each stack again to decide which items would go together. I couldn’t help but think that it would be nice to have one place to keep all my files, with sections for starters, salads, soups, entrees, etc. Even better, I thought, what if all my files were digital? Then I could use a computer to sort and search my files, and I could access my files from anywhere. My recipe-storage problem is pretty small in the grand scheme of things, but I’m sure many companies have some large-scale data-access concerns, as the amount of data available to collect and store increases daily. IBM has many solutions aimed at improving and simplifying data storage and access, which is this issue’s theme. In the cover story, IBMer Eric Naiburg describes an integrated data-management approach for each stage in the lifecycle of your data—from requirement to retirement. Read about this approach and IBM’s Optim product line, beginning on page 28. Just as I’d like a tool to put all of my favorite recipes online, IBM has many tools for creating a data warehouse on your System z* server. From InfoSphere* Warehouse to Cognos* business intelligence resources, read how you can leverage the mainframe environment for data storage and access. The article begins on page 36. You can’t cover topics about data without talking about storage. This issue’s Focus on Storage column, on page 18, outlines how Tivoli* Storage Manager 6 can help your business deal with overflowing data. 20 09 ibms ystemsmag .com/mai nframe Looking beyond data storage to the entire I T Infrastructure, two IBMers with the Systems Lab Services and Training organization describe how IBM has updated the Scorpion Study. Read how you can optimize your server-technology solutions in less than two months, beginning on page 10. If they determine you need an upgrade, Technical Editor Jim Schesvold describes best practices for planning a z/OS* migration in the article that starts on page 42. While I’m searching for a digital solution for my recipe-f iling dilemma, IBM has many solutions available now to help with your increasing data needs.
